LVW-5045 DVD Recorder

At $290, the Lite-On LVW-5045 is the least expensive of the DVD and hard drive recorders we looked at for our January 2006 roundup, despite including both a DVD and a VHS deck. But there is a trade-off: Many features that make the more-expensive...

Other niceties include support for both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW format discs; a roomy 160GB hard drive that can hold up to 196 hours of video (at the lowest quality setting; capacity falls to 33 at the highest quality); the ability to pause live TV; and...

Performance

Lite-On LVW-5045

Relatively inexpensive; easy to use; roomy 160GB hard disk; high-speed dubbing to HDD or DVD; chasing playback; solid editing features; records to DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW; FireWire input; copies images, MP3s, and WMAs to the hard drive; records audio CDs.

Long hard-disk recordings cause lip-sync errors; won't let you watch one taped show while recording another; no onscreen programming guide or IR blaster; can't record video at one speed and dub in another.

Despite a decent price and easy-to-use functions, the LVW-5045 suffers from a lip-sync glitch and a hobbled feature set.

LiteOn LVW-5045 HDD&DVD Recorder

Standalone recorders are currently getting more and more popular and the market is already full of such devices. We can safely assume that further development in this sector of the consumer market will continue in similar fashion and interest from...

The LiteOn LVW-5045 is already on the market at various prices, ranging between €450-€550, which will certainly make it quite popular, considering the features it packs at that price. However, since the market for this kind of devices is growing...

Lite-On LVW-5045

Lite-On's LVW-5045 HDD and DVD recorder is designed to record broadcast analog TV to either a hard disk or directly to an optical disc. It is compatib...

Progressive scan, wide range of supported media, easy to use

Limited number of inputs and outputs, some small glitches

A couple of minor issues hold the Lite-On LVW-5045 back from stardom, but for the techno-savvy it's still an appealing alternative to the bigger brands.

Lite-On LVW-5045 review

Lite-On's first hard-disk/DVD recorder costs less than just about any comparable product on the market--close to $300 online. Competitors such as the Panasonic DMR-EH50 and the TiVo-driven models from Humax cost more and, in some cases, deliver...

Liteon LVW-5045

Packed with features, the Liteon LVW-5045 is good value. AV performance might not be up with the big-brand-name competitors, but it's not as expensive either.

Large 160GB hard drive gives 66 hours of good-quality video storage ; Progressive-scan video ; Wide format support ; Can copy DVDs to hard drive

Basic design ; Simple remote control

LiteOn LVW5045

This is a hard disc and DVD recorder/player but it also has the ability to do several other things. It should be an ideal piece of kit.

I do hope the inthe title sentence gave due warning. I have had this unit for some timeand after trying everything I could think of - while waiting for themanual to arrive - I passed on to other things.
