Sony RDR-HXD995 review

Superb upscaling combi with 250GB multiformat recording

Excellent features ; Decent recording ; Can be upgraded for Pay TV

Won't handle DiVX via USB ; No auto CD track naming

Essential Freeview+ timer features combine with decent 1080p upscaling and time savers such as intelligent chapter creation to form an impressive combi deck

Sony RDR-HXD995 review

This DVD recorder ticks all our boxes for spec and performance – and it has a gargantuan 250GB hard disk

Stylish, simple to use ; good specification ; excellent TV picture and recordings ; good DVD picture

Not much at all

Ticks all our boxes for spec and performance – if you want a huge hard disk, this should be your weapon of choice

In terms of connectivity the Sony RDR-HXD995 has everything you are likely to need. There are two USB ports for viewing digital photos on the large screen, a connection for plugging in your HD camcorder which can then be used to store content on the...

Sony RDR-HXD995

There's a choice of two on-screen programme listings, Guide+ which also controls external set-top boxes or the dedicated Freeview one for helpful extras like automatic Series Recording. Whichever you choose you are not locked out of browsing the guide,...

Superb array of flexible features; pay-TV CAM slot included

No auto track naming for CD dukebox; can't play or copy DivX from USB

Only irritation is that programmed recordings set up in advance are deleted when the channels have to be re-tuned from time to time. Not surprising, because the advance programming would then be pointing at the wrong channel. I expect this is common of...

Easy to use from the box. Many additional features for the enthusiastic and the technophile. Ideal for Freeview recording either with the onboard digital tuner or via 'line in' from set top box. Familiarisation rewarded by many user selected options...

Limited editing functionality-cannot join or move parts of recording. Analogue tuner unnecessary- could remove and enable simultaneous recording of 2 digital broadcasts when required? May also improve quality of digital tuner. Manual works well for the...
