Review: HP iPaq Travel Companion 310

Batman has Robin, Sherlock has Watson. Hell, even Mr. Burns has his ever-attentive Smithers. So it's reasonable that globe-hopping travelphiles should have an equally dedicated,...

2-D and 3-D map options are clean and easy to read. GPS tracking while on foot or in a vehicle works without a digital hiccup. Multiple voice and language options. Scroll-wheel controller makes zooming in on maps smoother than a Barry White album

Spades of extras + deep operating system = steep learning curve. Toggling between features often causes menu to temporarily stall. Only two measly gigs of included memory? Looks like we’re not giving up our iPods anytime soon

HP iPaq 310 Travel Companion GPS Device

Poor software design and usability undermine the high-quality hardware of this GPS device.

Voice directions include spoken names ; Crisp LCD touch screen

Must register to sync contacts ; Connected Web travel-planning service needs work

The 310 iPaq Travel Companion is good-looking hardware that handles navigation basics fine. But until the extras work better, it's not worth the high price

HP iPAQ 310 Travel Companion

HP's iPAQ 310 Travel Companion packs lots of navigation power into a slim package, and its high-resolution display creates amazing 3D views.

Powerful dual-core Titan processor. High-resolution widescreen display. Forty-channel GPS receiver. Excellent 3D rendering. Buildings rendered in 3D in 40 U.S. cities. Multisegment routing.

Power connects to device directly, not via mounting bracket. Text on the bottom of the screen is a bit small.

How To Buy the Right GPS

When you boot up just about any device from HP, you get a splash screen exclaiming, "HP Invent." This may be pure marketing shtick, but in the case of the new HP iPAQ 310 Travel Companion, it's actually true: The device offers innovation that its...

The HP iPAQ 310 Travel Companion is the first GPS device to use a speedy dual-core processor. When it's coupled with a high-resolution widescreen display, the results are pretty impressive.

HP iPaq 310 Travel Companion review

HP iPaq 310 Travel Companion

The HP iPaq 310 Travel Companion is a sleek portable navigation system with a gorgeous screen, text-to-speech functionality, and integrated Bluetooth. It also displays 3D building renderings and has multimedia capabilities.

The iPaq 310 was pretty awful at route recalculations, and the voice prompts weren't very loud or clear.

Despite a sleek design and an attractive feature set, the HP iPaq 310 Travel Companion shows an ugly side with inaccurate route recalculations and poor voice directions that makes us say pass for now.

Great display, robust GPS software, touch screen works flawlessly, 3.5mm headphone jack

Some slowdown at times, video play stutters, not all icons are clearly labelled

Performing well in a number of areas, HP's iPAQ 312 is a bit of a jack of all trades. While the media playback features are a bit of a gimmick, the GPS is robust and the Bluetooth hands-free functions well, making this a solid choice for users who have...

HP iPAQ 314 Travel Companion review

A compact and powerful sat nav, only let down by its speakers

Good screen ; Easy to follow ; Nice styling ; Powerful

Poor quality speaker

With a whole host of good features, it's disappoiting that this device should fall down on something so important as it's audible directions
