Acer Aspires to a Greater Ethos

The Acer Aspire Ethos wears its role of desktop replacement like an good, off-the-rack suit. It fits fairly well, but needs some alterations before approaching perfection.

Big, bright display good for getting work done ; Audio playback quality for movies is excellent

Viewing angles on the LCD are poor ; The detachable touchpad is terrible

Acer's Ethos is a good entertainment laptop with a few warts, particularly with the pointing device.

Acer Aspire Ethos review: Acer Aspire Ethos

Few things surprise us more than when laptop shoppers tell us that though they are planning to keep their new computer permanently chained to a desk (to essentially act as a desktop PC), they intend to buy a 13-inch (or even a 14- or 15-inch) laptop....

The Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G has a huge 1080p 18-inch display, and gets points for inventiveness for its detachable touch-pad remote control. Battery life was also excellent for such a large laptop.

While it's a clever idea, the pop-out touch pad was frustrating to use at times.

The 18-inch Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G is a huge multimedia powerhouse laptop with a unique removable touch-pad remote control. It's a clever idea, but one that might be ahead of its time.

Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G desktop replacement

A massive notebook with quad-core processing, an SSD system drive and expandable to 16GB of RAM

Performance ; SSD + hard drive ; Easily upgradable

Touchpad is a drag ; No dedicated volume buttons ; Glossy screen

It may be huge, but the Aspire Ethos houses plenty of good stuff, including a quad-core Core i7 CPU and a solid state drive, and it supports up to 16GB of RAM. It even has a nifty innovation: its touchpad is removable and doubles as a specific media...

Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G-9630 review

Big and powerful, this desktop replacement is no joke

Powerful as many desktops ; Beautiful 18-inch 1080p display ; Full-size keyboard ; Reasonably priced

Big and heavy ; Removable touchpad is quirky ; Poor battery life

When it comes to unique laptop design, Acer is no slouch. From super-slim ultrabooks to multimedia powerhouses, the Taiwanese company that was acquired by Gateway has been cranking out laptops like crazy. That said, the company's Aspire Ethos...

Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G review

When you think of the word laptop, it's inevitable that certain words spring to mind: mobility, lightness, portability, slow. Not so with the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G which is here to show you just how far we've come

Vibrant screen ; Tons of power ; Solid and attractive body

Speakers and touchpad ; Weight ; Steep price tag

The Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G may be an expensive beast of a machine, but it'll keep you entertained when the rest of the summer proves to be a washout.

An excellent home entertainment laptop with a detachable remote

Excellent performance Huge hard drive Sharp, colourful 1080p screen Interesting remote control gimmick Blu-ray drive

Crap touchpad Bulky and heavy Underpowered speakers

These days we're seeing a lot more slim and light ultraportable laptops. Rising up against these size zero models is the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G.

Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G

Vexatious touch pad and limp speakers aside, the 8951G is rather good. As long as you stay away from Acer's Clear.fi software, you'll likely get some enjoyment out of this laptop.

Touch pad can be removed and used as media remote. Battery life is very good for a laptop of this size. Great performance.

Speakers aren't that great. Touch pad lags even when connected to laptop. Non-removable battery.
