Acer Nitro 5 review: A Coffee Lake-flavored gaming laptop that won't empty your wallet

The Acer Nitro 5 may be big and heavy, with so-so battery life and a fairly dim screen, but if you're shopping for a gaming laptop that handle AAA titles without breaking the bank, it delivers the goods.

Impressive graphics performance for the price ; Boasts Coffee Lake Core i5 CPU with Hyper-Threading ; Comfy keyboard with above-average speakers

Bulky and heavy ; Middling battery life ; Relatively dim, non-touch display ; Falls short of 60-fps visuals at maxed graphics settings

Budget gaming laptops don't get as much of a break as their mainstream cousins. They still face intense pressure to deliver. The Acer Nitro 5 is big and heavy, with so-so battery life and a fairly dim screen. But if you're shopping for a gaming laptop...

Acer Nitro 5 (2018)

The Acer Nitro 5 won't blow you away with its performance or design, but it is a perfectly competent gaming laptop without any deal-breaking flaws for an aggressive price.

Inexpensive. Capable 1080p gaming performance for the price. Roomy 1TB hard drive. Decent display.

Finicky touchpad. GTX 1050's performance ceiling with demanding games is limited.

Bottom Line: The Acer Nitro 5 won't blow you away with its performance or design, but it is a perfectly competent gaming laptop without any deal-breaking flaws for an aggressive price.

Acer's Nitro 5 laptop has gaming muscle on the cheap

Good performance and a low price will help you ignore its few flaws.

The Acer Nitro 5 is an understated gaming laptop that's well configured for the money. You can easily add more memory and storage. It has an ample port assortment, including USB 3.1 Type-C.

The laptop's build quality isn't the best, and some might be disappointed by the display's color performance.

Pure and simple, the Acer Nitro 5 is just a good deal with excellent mobile gaming performance for its wallet-friendly price.

Acer Nitro 5: gaming on a budget

A reliable budget gaming laptop, but it's no esports champ

Priced aggressively ; It can actually play games! ; Has a backlit keyboard with hardware monitoring software

Flimsy lid ; It’s flexible ; Upper portions of keyboard get warm ; It’s heavy

After all, if you’re sharpening your skills and eliminating foes in multiplayer games, does it really matter how much eye candy you have?

Acer Nitro 5

The Acer Nitro 5 is an inexpensive gaming laptop that promises a good gaming experience even at full HD resolution, but it cuts some corners on build quality and everyday computing performance.

Long battery life. Lighter than some 15-inch gaming laptops. Impressive graphics performance for the price.

Middling performance on everyday computing tasks. Lackluster build quality in some areas. Single-color keyboard backlight. Hard-to-read keys.

Bottom Line: The Acer Nitro 5 is an inexpensive gaming laptop that promises a good gaming experience even at full HD resolution, but it cuts some corners on build quality and everyday computing performance.

Acer Nitro 5 review: Is it worth $2,300 with an RTX 3080?

The Acer Nitro 5 is a beast, but its competitors are savages

15.6-inch, 1440p 165Hz panel ; Ultra-fast video transcoding ; Incredible AMD performance ; Good color accuracy

Dim display ; Quiet speakers ; Atypical keyboard layout ; Pricey

The Acer Nitro 5 is packed with an ultra-powerful CPU and a dynamite GPU, but it still has to put up one hell of a fight against its beastly rivals.

The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop Review: Absolutely AMD - Ryzen Plus Polaris

In the last year we've taken a look at a couple AMD Ryzen APU-powered (Raven Ridge) laptops, and while these laptops have had their ups and downs in terms of battery life, one area where AMD has never shied away from is total performance. Even in a...

Even with the shortcomings, the Acer Nitro 5 is still a great value. The AMD powered model is even more so. At $669.99 as a starting price, it’s well under most Ultrabooks in terms of cost, yet delivers far more performance. And with the 256GB SSD...

Acer Nitro 5 (Ryzen 7 2700U, Radeon RX 560X, FHD) Laptop Review

A rare sight. While Intel and Nvidia still call the shots in the high-end segment, AMD is quite well-positioned in affordable laptops. The best example is the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42 with a Ryzen 7 2700U and Radeon RX 560X, which can be purchased for...

decent battery life thanks to efficient hardware ; convincing price-performance ratio ; good IPS panel

no Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 Gen2 ; single-channel RAM only ; weak SSD during writing

AMD enthusiasts who have been yearning for a suitable multimedia notebook with gaming ambitions are exactly at the right address with the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42-R6V0. Okay, you can see various cost-cutting measures (small battery, meager connections,...

Acer Nitro 5 (i7-8750H, GTX 1050 Ti, FHD) Laptop Review

Budget gaming laptop. With the Nitro 5, Acer offers a 15-inch notebook for price-conscious gamers. It features a 6-core CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512-GB SSD for less than 1,500 Euros (~ $1,760). The matte Full HD display is driven by a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

Great contrast ratio and viewing angles of the display ; Relatively good price-performance ratio ; Switching between dedicated GPU and iGPU ; Great battery life ; Fast Wi-Fi

Mediocre connectivity (no Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen2 or DisplayPort) ; Poor color gamut

The Acer Nitro 5 is one of the best budget gaming notebooks currently available on the market, even though it has some minor flaws. Acer offers you an attractively priced device, which is successful in almost every aspect - if you can live with the...

The new Acer Nitro 5 is a solid, unremarkable budget gaming laptop. While its affordability is commendable, its large bulk and middling gaming performance make it difficult to recommend.
