Dell XPS 12 review: with the launch of Windows 8, 'convertible' takes on a new meaning

Even if you never use it in tablet mode, this 12.5-inch convertible is a solid Ultrabook in its own right.

Lovely design, solid build quality400-nit, 1080p display12-second boot-upComfortable keyboard

Finicky trackpadRelatively short battery lifeNo SD slot

Though the XPS 12's size and weight make it a bit unwieldy as a substitute tablet, it's still a compelling option if you're in the market for a high-end, touch-enabled Ultrabook. The XPS 12 is almost as light as other Ultrabooks, with a premium...

Acer Aspire S7 and Dell XPS 12 review: battle of the transforming 1080p touchscreen ultrabooks

The Dell XPS 12 and Acer Aspire S7 aren't your average laptops. They're premium, and unique. One is a razor-thin, Gorilla Glass-infused attempt to transform Acer's reputation, the other Dell's...

Excellent 1080p touchscreen display ; Clever spinning hinge ; Solid keyboard and audio quality

Many touchpad issues ; Middling battery life ; Few ports ; Cumbersome as a tablet

Perfect for couch surfing, but probably not on an airplane

Dell XPS 12 Convertible Touch: laptop meets tablet

Dell's cleverly designed XPS 12 Convertible Touch Ultrabook functions as both a laptop and a tablet. It's heavy for the size, but a good performer with a great display.

Functions as a laptop as well as tablet ; Retina-like pixel density

No integrated Ethernet jack ; Pricey

The XPS 12 Convertible Touch Ultrabook is a clever and stylish design, and it obviates the need to carry a tablet with you. At least if a Windows 8 tablet is what you want. It's on the heavy side, but that's may be a common theme with touchscreen...

Review: Dell XPS 12

The swivel screen notwithstanding, as a Windows 8 laptop, the XPS 12 is unusual from the start. The problems really kick in when you flip...

Incredible screen resolution and brightness, particularly at this size. Kids think the swivel screen is “really cool

Can’t use touchscreen while wearing the required oven mitts. Dreadful touchpad. Heavy, hot, loud, and power-hungry as a tablet — a deadly combination. No memory card slot

Dell XPS 12 (2012)

The Dell XPS 12 hybrid ultrabook/tablet features a flip-and-fold display, providing ultrabook specs and performance with tablet functionality.

Resurrects the flip-and-fold display. Intel Core i7-3517U processor. 256GB Solid-state drive. Long battery life. Comfortable keyboard and touchpad.

A better laptop than a tablet. Limited port selection.

Dell XPS 12 review: A unique take on the convertible laptop/tablet

If you're one of the few who remember the original Dell Inspiron Duo from 2010, pat yourself on the back. Like that Duo, the new XPS 12 has a screen that swivels at the middle of the lid's sides, so it can rotate 180 degrees along its horizontal axis...

The Dell XPS 12 is a thin, powerful, very cleverly designed touch-screen convertible that flips into multiple screen positions.

For all the hype about touch and tablets with Windows 8, the XPS 12 still works better as a laptop than as a slate. Its battery life is on the low side.

Dell has revamped its rotating Duo laptop concept into the much-improved XPS 12, but like most convertibles, it makes a better laptop than tablet.

Dell XPS 12 Review

This premium convertible Ultrabook features a carbon fiber and aluminum construction, 1080p IPS touch screen and of course Windows 8. Is this computer worth the premium price?

Beautiful touch screen display ; Seamless tablet experience ; Excellent build quality ; Good keyboard and touchpad

Lack of ports (no media card reader) ; Screen-heavy design ; Some software issues ; The XPS 12 is not inexpensive (starting at $1,200) but you're getting a quality machine with the best of the tablet and notebook worlds.

Review Dell XPS 12 Convertible

Windows 8 Hybrid. Windows 8 makes it possible: the convertibles,

Excellent sturdiness and build quality; Great IPS display; Good input devices; Long battery life; Very quiet in everyday use; Mini DisplayPort

Very expensive; Meager connectivity; Throttling (early BIOS); Modest speakers; Very thick and heavy in tablet mode

Many other manufacturers have announced convertibles like the XPS 12, and these are planned for release in the coming months. This includes the Asus Transformer Book and the Taichi, the Samsung Serie 5 Ultra Convertible and the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga.

Review of the Dell XPS 12 2-in-1, a Surface Pro competitor that falls just short of the mark

With the proven success of the Microsoft Surface Pro, other vendors are now coming out with their interpretations of a hybrid laptop/tablet. Dell gave us the XPS 12 and we show you how it stacks up.

There's a lot to like with the Dell XPS 12. The Thunderbolt 3 connector combined with a docking station lets you use the device like a full fledged desktop that works great. Having a large, fairly light tablet running Windows is also a really nice...
