HP 2140 Mini-Note review: HP 2140 Mini-Note

HP 2140 Mini-Note

Solid metal construction; full ExpressCard/54 slot; big keyboard.

Odd resolution loses a few pixels; no mobile-broadband options (yet); awkward mouse button placement.

HP offers a premium version of its plastic Mini 1000 while keeping the price down, making the Mini 2140 the Netbook to beat.

ExpressCard and SD media reader slots. Amazing battery life. Exceptional design aesthetics. Loaded with features trickling down from higher-end laptops

Touchpad too far south; flush design means fingers keep slipping off the bottom. Side-mounted buttons still too awkward for extended use. More expensive than a netbook should be

HP Mini 2140

The HP Mini 2140's sexy aluminum chassis is carried over from the 2133 Mini-Note, but HP has dumped the VIA parts in favor of Intel's Atom platform.

Edge-to-edge glass screen. Option for highest resolution on a 10-inch widescreen. Big battery option. Very good battery life from the three-cell battery. 92 percent keyboard. ExpressCard slot.

Mouse buttons are adjacent to the touchpad.

The only major downer involves a limited capacity to accommodate external devices. The machine has a few handy ports such as an SDHC flash card reader, VGA-out, an ethernet jack and two USB ports. But the USB ports are located on either side of the...

Attractive case; Robust aluminium chassis; Gigabit LAN, BT 2.0 available; ExpressCard 54 slot; Pleasant keyboard; Bright LED display; Low noise emission; Can reach good battery life

HP Mini 2140 Review

The low-cost ultraportable notebook or "netbook" market might have exploded in 2008, but HP plans to take the top spot in 2009 with the all new Mini 2140. This business-grade netbook features a 10.1-inch screen, a remarkably large keyboard, a high...

Excellent build quality (BEST in class) ; Great keyboard (BEST in class) ; ExpressCard slot offers fantastic expansion possibilities ; Multiple configuration options

Base configuration has low-resolution screen ; Strange location for touchpad buttons ; Screen is too reflective due to second glossy protective layer

As it stands now, if you're willing to put up with the lower resolution screen the Mini 2140 is probably the best netbook on the market. However, if you're willing to wait for HP to offer a higher resolution screen later this year you will be even happier
