HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook review: a good deal, but with trade-offs

There's lots to like about the Spectre 13 -- especially given the low price. For the money, you can expect an attractive design, bright display, fast performance and a generous warranty. But you should also prepare yourself for middling battery life...

Attractive design ; Fast performance ; Good specs for the money ; Bright display ; Generous warranty, Adobe Lightroom included gratis

Heavy for a 13-inch Ultrabook ; Middling battery life, especially considering the heft ; Trackpad needs a driver update ; Shallow keys have an occasionally "sticky" feel

It's easy for us to give the Spectre 13 a good review, but that's partly because the price is so reasonable. Were this priced in line with its peers, we'd have a harder time forgiving its flaky trackpad, sticky keyboard and relatively heavy weight. As...

HP Spectre 13 (2017)

The HP Spectre 13 is powerful and thin, with a gorgeous white and gold design, making it both a status symbol and a very capable ultraportable laptop.

Gorgeous white and gold styling. Extremely thin and light. Full HD touch screen. Excellent keyboard.

Diminutive, unresponsive touchpad.

Bottom Line: The HP Spectre 13 is powerful and thin, with a gorgeous white and gold design, making it both a status symbol and a very capable ultraportable laptop.

HP Spectre 13

The HP Spectre 13 combines a thin-as-you-can-get build with top-notch performance, all at a reasonable cost. Connectivity is limited to USB-C, but there's still a lot to like about this well-rounded, well-designed ultraportable.

The thinnest laptop currently available. Nice price. Fast performance. Good battery life. Sharp design. Constructed with high-quality materials. Multiple USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3.

The thinnest laptop currently available. Nice price. Fast performance. Good battery life. Sharp design. Constructed with high-quality materials. Multiple USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3. ; No traditional USB ports. 1080p display lacks touch technology.

Conclusion With an incredibly thin body and premium feel, the Spectre 13 is easy to recommend. It'll turn heads, but it's not a case of style over substance, as it beats or matches other top ultraportables we've tested. Because it costs $250 less than...

HP Spectre review

To touch or not to touch. That is the question asked of many Windows laptops, from bulky budget boxes to the slimmest premium systems. HP has two new high-end, very thin laptops, and it answers that question differently in each model.

The HP Spectre is remarkably thin while still managing to fit in Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The keyboard is excellent for such a slim body, and the bold design stands out in a sea of thin ultraportables.

The lack of a touchscreen is a big omission for a premium Windows laptop, and the limited ports may force you to carry extra dongles and accessories.

If you can work with USB-C ports and a nontouch display, the HP Spectre offers a great design and excellent performance in the world's thinnest full-power laptop body.

HP Spectre 13 review: an exceedingly well-executed return to the basics

Think all trackpads are the same? Run your fingers over HP's new Control Zone.

Innovative Control Zone touchpad works great with Windows 8 ; Fabulous battery life ; Very good audio

Integrated graphics will be a showstopper for some ; Annoying fan ; 802.11ac Wi-Fi is a $20 option

The HP Spectre 13 nails the fundamentals, and its innovative trackpad works great with Windows 8.

HP Spectre 13 (8th Gen Core)

The HP Spectre 13 is one of the best-looking laptops on the market, but short endurance holds it back.

Incredibly small; Beautiful design; Punchy keyboard

Poor battery life; Relatively dim display; Bottom runs hot

HP Spectre 13 Review: Thin requires compromise

How thin is too thin, and is extreme style worth extreme compromise? The HP Spectre 13 is the latest notebook to ask those questions, chasing - and indeed besting - Apple's MacBook in millimeters of depth and raw power potential, though demanding...

HP Spectre 13 Notebook Review

007 Spectre. HP designed a conventional notebook with a "thickness" of just 10 millimeters, so it is thinner than some first-gen tablets (original iPad: 13 mm). Our full review shows how HP accomplished to fit a fully featured Windows 10 PC into one of...

versatile dual USB Type-C Gen. 2 + Thunderbolt 3 ports ; comfortable backlit keyboard with firm tactile feedback ; ultrathin, lightweight, portable, and luxurious design ; high quality bright display; deep colors and contrast ; included USB Type-C to...

case rigidity is a step down compared to XPS 13 and MacBook Air 13 ; very limited connectivity options without use of dongles ; few SKUs; no 2K/3K/4K or touchscreen options ; below average CPU Turbo Boost performance ; small battery capacity; average...

The Spectre 13 is the thinnest 13.3-inch notebook currently in the market and a classic example of the law of diminishing returns. That is, you'll have to give up more and more features for every millimeter shaven off. The lack of any full-size USB...

HP Spectre 13 2017 review: A killer laptop, now touch-friendly

Video: Besides 8th-gen Intel CPUs, a standard touchscreen elevates the new Spectre 13.

New standard touchscreen ; Can be configured with a 4K touchscreen ; Improved, sleeker design with unique, ceramic white finish (one of two finish options) ; New speaker placement makes for a more spacious keyboard design ; Quad-core processors improve...

No Precision touchpad ; Fans can be loud

The original Spectre 13 was one of our favorite laptops last year, and the new Spectre 13 is one of our favorites this year. HP didn't bother fixing what wasn't broken; instead, it focused on improving the often overlooked aspects of most laptops. I'm...
