Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 review

Though Chrome OS has come a long way, this particular device has disappointing battery life and feels slightly overpriced given what it can do.

Comfortable keyboard, improved trackpadDisplay is easily viewable outdoorsChrome OS has improved since launch

Shorter battery life than last-gen modelSpeakers max out at low volumeExpensive given what it can do right now

After testing not one but two new Chrome devices, it's clear that Google's fledgling OS is more pleasant to use than it was a year ago. What's less obvious, though, is to what extent the new Series 5 Chromebook is actually an improvement, and whether...

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Review

Samsung's Series 5 Chromebook comes with the price tag, weight and occasional unreliability of a true PC, but none of the power or flexibility.

Chromebook Series 5

For almost two years now, Google's been talking up the idea of always-on, always-connected laptops based on a version of its Chrome browser. Local storage, of course, was not an ingredient in the equation. And while a lucky few developers got to put...

Solid build quality and comfortable keyboard ; Super long battery life ; Bright, outdoor-viewable display

Flaky touchpad ; Video-out requires an adapter ; Hampered by Chrome OS' limited functionality

Chromebooks Find the Right Price

In every single way, the Samsung Chromebook — seriously, that's what they named this thing — is the lesser of the company's two Chrome OS portables. It's made with lower-quality materials. It has a smaller display. It has the guts of a tablet rather...

Samsung Chromebook Series 5 review: Samsung Chromebook Series 5

Samsung Chromebook Series 5

The ; is a small, attractive Netbook with long battery life, true instant-on Web access, and enough computing to use the Internet.

The Series 5 is expensive for its features and abilities, and using it can be frustrating depending on your wireless signal strength.

Despite solid hardware, great battery life, and fast startup, we can't recommend the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 until and unless Google improves the Chrome OS.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook 550 (XE550C22-H01)

The new Samsung Series 5 Chromebook 550 (XE550C22-H01) laptop is speedy when connected to the Internet.

Quick bootup into Chrome. Full rich Website support, including Flash. Chrome Extensions and setting carry over from PC-based browsing. 100MB 3G free a month for two years. Verizon 3G. Less Malware to worry about. Ethernet port.

Locked into Google account. Google Docs/Drive isn?t Office. Useless without Internet connection. HDMI/DVI/VGA requires an adapter.

Review: Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook

With Samsung's newly redesigned Series 5 Chromebook, it feels like Chrome OS has finally arrived.

Updated design with a complete (and much needed) redo on the trackpad. Excellent video performance, smooth scrolling and snappy input. Six hours of battery. Login screen great for multi-user environments, and all your bookmarks and history can be...

No big disks, no keyboard backlight, no DVD drive, no Bluetooth, no other traditional laptoppy stuff. Speakers stink. Screen is dim and lacks sharpness. Could be lighter. The whole “Just the web?” thing doesn’t fly for everyone

New Samsung Chromebook & Chromebox review: Chrome OS grows up

2012 is the year of Chrome OS — or so we're told. When we spoke with Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome, he told us that this is the culmination of "a long, slow march" for Google's...

Chrome OS is hugely improved ; Fast, reliable performance ; Great trackpad ; Solid battery life

A little expensive ; Chrome OS still needs more features to be competitive ; Relatively useless without an internet connection ; Can't use multiple displays at once

Chrome OS is almost ready for us, but we might not be ready for Chrome OS

Samsung XE550C22 review

Editors' note (October 18, 2012): In addition to the Chromebook reviewed here, Samsung now offers a newer $249 model .

The 2012 Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 has more RAM, an improved Chrome OS, and a faster processor than the previous version.

A relatively high price, the need to always be online, and the general limitations of the Chrome OS make it tough to recommend this Chromebook over a less expensive laptop or tablet.

Despite solid hardware and a slightly improved Chrome OS, the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 comes with far too many caveats and compromises compared with similarly priced but more-capable tablets and laptops.
