Review: Sylvania G Netbook

[Editor's note: Looks like the Sylvania Netbook we reviewed wasn't a fully baked version. We'll be getting a finalized demo unit soon and will update...

Has a real hard drive (80 GB) instead of flash storage. Includes three USB ports and an SD card reader. Comes in colors. Bright screen for this category

Slower than a sedated slug at just about every app despite 1.6-GHz Atom chip and 1-GB RAM (standard 9 model includes just 512 MB RAM). Cartoonish styling. Considerably heavier than advertised (and the Eee PC 900) at 2.6 pounds. Far too buggy to be...

Not a powerhouse, but gets the job done

The touchpad is very, very small, so I bought a microsoft usb wirelsee mini mouse. I also bought a lite-on usb slim dvd burner, a set of logitech usb speakers and a usb to serial cable for setting up switches at work. The whole setup works very well and...

Small, compact, lightweight, great battery life before needing recharging, built in webcam, wireless or hard cable connectivity

I really wanted to use linux on this, but the gos operating system that comes with it was very buggy, even after reinstalling the newer version available from the sylvania website, so I installed XP home on it and downloaded the drivers (also available...

Great little computer. but not stellar

It would be nice to have a bigger screen and a bigger HDD, but oh well. It is easier to install a new OS when you have a USB cd/dvd drive lying around/

I am a big linux fan and I love Ubuntu. After finding the propers drivers and such, it worked great. Suse isn't great for the average user so if you want to stick with lin, go and download Ubuntu lite or something. It is not hard to set things up since...

Not really that powerful, but when you are using just to have for meetings and college work, it works great

Sylvania G Netbook

Put XP SP3 on it or get the CPU scaling working properly under Linux and it's a great little machine. OpenChrome is poor under Linux but its coming along a little better now that VIA is helping out. If you have the money, a SSD swap would benefit this...

Great build quality, form factor, screen. Battery life is also impressive for a 3-cell 2200mAh battery. Can get warm but I blame the HDD for that

gOS is a flop and it's a project to get CPU scaling working properly under Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and 8.10. You need cpu-freq and a few other tools and add them to the modules file ; Harddrive is horribly slow and gets hot way too fast

Cool mobile machine

needs a microphone.

Install Windows XP Sp1, Sp2, Sp3 and it runs great the net book actually response better on a Windows based Operating system. No lagging videos nor flash videos on play it does what it was designed to do

The whole linux things is just horrible, it makes the machine lag on video plays and the response over all is slow

SYLVANIA G Netbook (GNET13001) VIA C7-M ULV 1.20GHz 7" WVGA 1GB Memory 30GB HDD Netbook

The linux OS is slow and buggy, but once the XP is installed it runs allot faster. I dont see the CPU as under power as other reviews say that it is, i guess it would seem that way if you switching from desktop and the netbook.

Small, easy to read, Very Light Weight (1.82lbs). Really good value for the money. 30gb of hard drive, 1gb of ram. It has everything you need plus its not a pain to carry around like the other hug laptops

Comes with some linux based OS which is very similar to Mac os. Put that's an easy fix after downloading the XP drivers from the wed site, and hocking up an external CD drive
