Nikon AF-S TC-14E III 1.4x Teleconverter Review

Gary Wolstenholme reviews the new Nikon TC-14E III 1.4x Teleconverter.

Reduction in sharpness with converter is almost imperceptible ; Excellent build quality ; Reasonably lightweight and compact ; Reduced falloff with converter ; Weather sealed ; Support for Nikon's latest lenses with electromagnetic aperture ; Fluorine...

Price could be difficult to justify if you don't own a lens with an electromagnetic aperture ; Extra tab on front bayonet mount prevents mounting third party and older lenses on the converter.

Some people are nervous about using a teleconverter, as they have a reputation of reducing image quality by a noticeable amount. This new converter from Nikon proves that doesn't have to be the case. Unfortunately, the price means that unless you...

Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II 35mm Converters

I bought this teleconverter when I bought my 70-200. So far I've had great results shooting wide open at F4, and better results when stopped down a stop or two.

IQ isn't very noticeable when stopped down a stop or two

Will degrade image quality, but is much cheaper than buying the 300 F2.8 VR

Nikon TC-14E 1.4x AF-S, AF-I Teleconverter 35mm Converters

Firstly, I have the newer version: the TC-14E II. This is a simply excellent teleconverter, as is reflected by its very high new cost price of up to £400. I bought it bundled with my mint condition 70-200mm f2.8 AF-S VR lens for £1080 UK pounds for...

AF speed and optical quality are absolutely fantastic: the same as without the converter: what more can you ask for?Only 1 stop of light is lost so handholding is still possible with a 70-200 f2.8 or 80-200 f2.8 or smaller lenses. The teleconverter is...

Expense: very very expensive to buy new. Buy it secondhand. Not compatible with AF-D lenses. This will not work with the excellent Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D lenses. Therefore I only have two lenses I can use this converter on, both of them very expensive...

Nikon TC-14E 1.4x AF-S, AF-I Teleconverter 35mm Converters

Been using the TC14E for over a year now and find it just fabulous. When using it with f2.8 AFS lenses I have noticed only a very small decrease in focus speed. On a f4 you can notice a little more slowing of the AF but on both occassions its tack...

Tack sharp images, used on 80-200 f2.8, 300 f4, 400 f2.8Small in size, especially compared to the 2x

The price. But I suppose quality is not cheap

Nikon TC-14E 1.4x AF-S, AF-I Teleconverter 35mm Converters

A nice converter to carry with as it is not too heavy and small in size. Actually, I planned to head for the 2x, but one aperture to loose with the 1.4x is enough.

rather short; thus making the overall length of camera-converter-lens not significantly longer. -> no big danger of breaking

covers are difficult to stick on when changing in rush (e.g. shaking airplane, train)

Nikon AF-I Teleconverter TC-14E

FR : - Matériel d'origine Nikon - Finition soignée - Robuste US : - Original Nikon equipment - neat finish - robust

US : -...

Nikon AF-I Teleconverter TC-14E

Absolutely no loss to sharpness and the 40% gain in reach is fantastic. I use it with my 300 f/2.8 lens and only loose one f-stop but turns my lens into 420mm. Certainly cheaper than paying for a pro 400mm lens and weighs less.

I think it is a little pricey but you have to pay for quality.
