D-Link MediaLounge review

Review summary Fresh off the heels of a major upgrade, D-Link's MediaLounge DSM-320 is among the first digital media receivers capable of wirelessly streaming rights-managed (DRM) audio files, such as those purchased from the Musicmatch or Napster...

Affordable; streams music, photos, and video; compatible with DRM WMA files downloaded from online music stores; compatible with Rhapsody subscription streaming music service; works with Windows Media Connect server; component-video output; optical and...

Finicky wireless connectivity with non-D-Link routers; lacks front-panel display and controls; doesn't display album artwork; not compatible with files purchased from iTunes Music Store; not Mac compatible.

It's one of the first digital media receivers capable of playing tracks purchased from online music stores, but the DSM-320's wireless performance left us wanting more.

D-Link MediaLounge DSM-320

The D-Link MediaLounge DSM-320 is an affordable digital media hub that has fixed some of its early kinks.

Wired and wireless (802.11g). Low price. Internet radio support. Easy setup.

Some minor glitches remain.

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player

This is a superior digital media receiver with the right kind of wireless support (802.11g).

If you don't need HD photo/video output (look at Roku media receivers if you do) and you're confident D-Link will fix some of the obvious usability issues, the DSM-320 is just about as good as it gets, especially if you can buy it at its street price....

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player

In this day and age, a Home Theatre PC is becoming more and more standard. Let's face it though, most PC's make noise, and don't really blend in with your Entertainment Center. D-Link has a product in the market that fits these needs. I'm talking...

Sleek, slender design ; Plays back a myriad of formats ; Silent ; Full Function Remote

Wireless can disconnet and you must search for media server to connect ; Slow page loads when viewing thumbnailed photos ; Online media by subscription

Overall my experience with the DSM-320 was a good one. It does have a few quirks, but I've full confidence that they can be worked out with a firmware upgrade. I also have to give a bit of lee-way as the Media Server I am running falls just short of...

Expert Review

A good player for newcomers to the media streamer scene, the DSM-320RD doesn't do anything special, but does do a respectable job of streaming video and audio.

Not overly complex, relatively easy to use

No HDMI, some image noise in DVD playback, some compatibility problems with today's file types

D-Link DSM-320

Space efficient, plays music and displays photos well

Buggy software, difficult for a novice to set up, poor video playback

The D-Link is not yet suitable for the home entertainment buff who wants a plug-and-play device that will deliver streaming audio, pictures and video without fuss.

D-Link DSM-320RD Wireless Media Player

The DSM-320RD is a simple media streamer that's definitely a touch dated, but worthwhile if your needs are only very modest -- or if you need a spare DVD player.

Simple setup routine ; Embedded DVD player

May not fit in some more slender cabinets ; No HDMI/DVI

There's no doubt that there are newer and technically more polished and capable players on the market than the DSM-320RD. It's pretty clearly a unit that's best suited to streaming novices whose needs are small.

D-Link DSM-320

Better than a stotty? Ahhhh the rhetorical question, perhaps comparing the all in one streaming media centre from D-Link to a Northern bread product is a little weird but hey that's what you expect from us!
