Slingbox 500 review: Worth it for the Wi-Fi

The high-end Slingbox 500, which streams live TV -- and DVR recordings -- to most smartphones, tablets, and PCs, adds HDMI support, but it's only really worth it if you need the Wi-Fi connectivity.

The ; streams video from your TV or DVR (or any analog source) to your PC, tablet, smartphone, and some streaming boxes at resolutions up to full 1080p HD. IR blasters are built into the box’s body, eliminating the need for annoying extra external...

At close to $300, it's fairly expensive. Smartphone- and tablet-viewing apps cost extra. It duplicates some of the features found on TV anywhere apps you may already be using. As always, streaming capabilities are only as good as your home bandwidth.

While you'll pay a premium for its extra features, the Slingbox 500 is an excellent way to watch your TV or DVR video content anywhere.

The Slingbox 500 is available at Amazon and retailers like Best Buy.

Buyer Be Cautious with the New Slingbox 500

I've had a love/hate relationship with Slingbox for some time. I love it when it works and, well, I hate it when it doesn't. The reason previous Slingbox models would not work for me have to do with HDMI, HDCP (High-Bandwidith Digital Copy Protection)...

As I said, I’m a fan of the Slingbox hardware and service. If it works well with your existing system or you’re prepared to make some changes, it is an excellent way to view content from your TV in another location. But I think users contemplating...

Nice product

Was easy to set up. I have it hooked up to my DirecTV receiver. Was able to log into my box from 500 miles away and watch my DVR'd shows in HD. A little remote control pops up on the screen that looks just like the one I have hat home and controls the...
