Good button placement ; Intuitive design ; Useful software tools
Poor build quality ; Chalky exterior
The Steelseries Rival 500 is a decent gaming mouse with some interesting and unique features, but it’s not without a few faults. While the overall design is innovative and intuitive, the build quality leaves much to be desired, and the cord doesn’t...

The Rival 500 isn't a great mouse, but its innovative thumb layout and the inclusion of haptic feedback are interesting glimpses of the future.
Intuitive and useful thumb-button layout ; Beloved PWM3360 sensor ; "Tactile Feedback" is like controller rumble in a mouse
"Tactile Feedback" is only in a handful of games ; Short, squat, and heavy ; Tons of buttons, but none feel great to press
The Rival 500 is fascinating. I can’t in good conscience score it highly—I just don’t think it’s an incredible mouse. The shape is squat and fat, it’s heavy, the buttons are spongy when they need a satisfying click and too stiff when they need to be...

Our Rival 500 review takes a look at what SteelSeries has done differently with their MOBA/MMO gaming mouse, and if it's an improvement over the usual 12-button grid layout.
Easy to use, great customization features, comfortable. Has the ability to bind games and applications to configuration setups. Useful for both gaming and office applications.
A braided cable, or swappable cables like the Rival 700, would be a nice addition. Only three games work with Gamesense.

If you have spent some time studying biology, you will realize your thumb is the most important finger on the human hand. Because of its large range of movement and high relative strength, as well as the fact humans have what are known as opposable...
If you are unfamiliar with the MOBA/MMO scene and has not seen a mouse with a grid layout, look up something like the Corsair Scimitar. In my opinion, having something that looks like an old phone's dial pad on the side of your mouse is interesting to...

The SteelSeries Rival 500 is designed specifically for MMO and MOBA games. So with that you have 15 programmable buttons, a PixArt PMW3360 16000 DPI optical
– 15 programmable buttons ; – Side buttons are actually functional ; – Tactile feedback ; – Comfortable design ; – Engine 3 software
– Could be too cumbersome for people looking for something more streamlined ; – Can only quick-switch two different DPI levels
I have been using the Rival 500 for a few weeks now and I have to say SteelSeries implementation of this mouse is done quite well. I do not have the largest hands, but I am still able to use all of the buttons on this mouse. The larger size of the...

The Rival 500 is an atypical take on an eSports gaming mouse, and while it's most definitely not the mouse for me, I can envision a lot of players for whom it's just right. It's got a ton of buttons, but it's not an MMO mouse; it's big, but...
Large, comfortable design ; Innovative tactile feedback ; Sensible software ; Novel take on eSports mouse
Steep learning curve ; No onboard profiles
The SteelSeries Rival 500 is a comfortable, functional mouse with lots of customization potential and a reasonable price for all it offers.

SteelSeries have long been established as one of the major players for enthusiast gaming peripherals. When we reviewed their Sensei mouse a while back we found it to be one of the best gaming mice around and they had huge success with their World of...

Great customisation software in their "engine". Once adapted to, the new thumb buttons are really effective.
The extra buttons on the finger side are hard to click when resting two fingers (index : left and middle : right click), but are too easy to accidentally press when resting 3 fingers (middle finger on scroll wheel). This is taking some getting used...
