Apple iPod Shuffle (512MB) Review

Apple's iPod Shuffle is an audio player meant for anyone that wants a single purpose; to simply play music.

Apple iPod Shuffle review

Before the iPhone was Apple's bread and butter, there was the iPod.

The Apple iPod Shuffle is affordably priced with a compact design and long-lasting battery. It's both stylish and easily wearable, thanks to its sturdy built-in clip.

Requires a USB sync from a PC or Mac running iTunes. There's no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Only 2GB of storage. Navigating your music is a bit difficult without a screen. You can't download subscription Apple Music songs.

Apple's most affordable iPod is a cheap, workout-friendly option for listening to music or podcasts, but it shows its age with a reliance on iTunes syncing and lack of wireless support.

Is the iPod Shuffle too cute to be practical?

The Apple iPod Shuffle is an adorable way to take your favorite songs on the go, but sometimes it's too small for its own good. We put the Shuffle to the test.

The ; includes a sturdy built-in clip; support for playlists, audiobooks, podcasts, Genius Mixes; and a multilingual VoiceOver feature that announces track information, battery status, and menu navigation.

The 2GB capacity can't hold much; there's no headphone remote nor radio; the track controls tend to get pinched when clipping the iPod to your clothes; and the chances of you accidentally running it through the washing machine are quite high.

Apple iPod Shuffle (2012) review

Apple's iPod Shuffle is small, versatile, colorful, and at $49, it's arguably the least expensive device that Apple sells. For those times when you want an impossibly small way to take music with you, the iPod Shuffle is still the most widely...

Apple iPod Shuffle 2010 (2GB) review: Apple iPod Shuffle 2010 (2GB)

The iPod Shuffle returns to its big-button glory days, only this time around it offers support for playlists, audiobooks, podcasts, Genius Mixes, and a multilingual VoiceOver feature that announces track information, battery status, and menu navigation.

The 2GB capacity can't hold much; there's no headphone remote nor radio; the track controls tend to get pinched when clipping the iPod to your clothes; and the chances of you accidentally running it through the washing machine are quite high.

The iPod Shuffle's buttons are back, and the lightest, smallest MP3 player on the planet is now better than ever.

Apple iPod Shuffle 1GB

The second-generation Apple miniplayer gets even smaller, and cuts its price by almost half.

Inexpensive Stylish

Lacks LCD screen, Fair audio quality

The bottom line: I like the small size and versatility of Apple's new iPod Shuffle. In view of the unit's modest dimensions, the lack of a screen seems less deplorable than with the original Shuffle

All you need are two batteries and Apple's iPod Shuffle Battery Pack to add a whopping 20 hours of juice to your iPod Shuffle.

Performance

Apple iPod Shuffle

Design is dead simple and compact yet stylish and wearable; excellent integration with iTunes; solid sound quality; affordable.

No LCD; no extra features such as an equalizer; slow transfer speeds.

The iPod Shuffle, with its ultralow price, its dead-simple design, and its iTunes integration, is virtually guaranteed to be a hit, especially among those looking for a second iPod.

Apple iPod Shuffle

The newest member of the iPod family is a super light-weight, excellent, though screenless, flash-based player.

Very light weight. Top-notch audio performance. Recharges from USB. Can automatically update itself with fresh songs.

No navigation display, preferences, or settings. A little too minimal for music explorers. Loud enough to cause hearing damage if you're not careful.
