The Sony VPL-HW30ES is an impressively capable 1080p projector for both 2D and 3D, but finding the best settings for it can take some time and effort.

Sony's VPL-HW projectors go back a few years, with steady model-to-model refinements. Last year it was the VPL-HW20; this year it's the VPL-HW30ES. Note that the HW30 now carries Sony's premier ES designation. But there's more than that to account for...
I’ve long since passed the point where I look back nostalgically and yearn for the image quality of those classic CRT projectors. But the fact that even a sub-$4,000 projector can keep us from pining for those good old days is more than just news; it’s...

You may purchase the standard projector, the VPL-HW30ES - MSRP of $3699, or you may purchase, for $300 more in the US, the VPL-HW30AES, a bundle that includes two pair of rechargeable 3D active glasses, and the Sony emitter (transmitter), used to sync...
One of the brighest 3D capable projectors so far, in the over $3500 price class ; 800+ measured lumens in "best" mode, no problem, even with large screens (ie: 10 feet wide) ; Excellent overall color, and skin tones ; Lots of preset image modes ;...
Black levels, while very good, not best in class ; Emitter seems to work best in front of room (long ethernet cable from projector) ; CFI (like all but a few projectors) is a little much for movie viewing (changes the director's intent) ; Though...
This is a projector that works best in a home theater environment, but can double in a light controlled family room as well. It's definitely more value than last year's VPL-VWPro1, and can easily take on the likes of the Sharp XV-Z17000, and Optoma...

As to shadow detail, again, classic performance for the price range. Some will be a bit better, but, mostly I’d be quibbling. I consider that last mile of dark shadow detail to be relatively minor. Given a choice at this level of projector, I see black...

The Sony VPL-HW30ES is half the price of Sony's debut 3D projector, but feels twice as good. Result.
Good all-round picture quality ; Much reduced crosstalk ; Great value ; Runs quietly
no 12v trigger output ; Still residual crosstalk in very specific circumstances ; Side-mounted AV inputs
Sony has worked wonders with the HW30ES, erasing the disappointments of the VW90ES from our minds with a projector that serves up a classy, hugely watchable and best of all impressively affordable big-screen 3D - and 2D - feast.

Nice looks ; easy to use ; dynamic picture, smooth motion ; quiet
Occasional picture noise ; fastest motion causes some instability
Very capable, but there are better projectors for the cash
