It seems like only yesterday that I reviewed Sony's VPL-VW85 projector, but it was a year and a half ago (Home Theater, November 2009). Sony launches a new flagship home theater projector every year at the September CEDIA EXPO, and 2010 was no exception.

It is, as expected, an excellent 2D projector, and there's lots to discuss about 3D as well. We loved the improvements in the far less expensive Pro1, when we reviewed it in December (2D only). Let's see if the Sony VW90ES impresses as well
Excellent color, and overall picture quality, post calibration ; Really good black levels, but not the best ; Above average brightness in "best" movie mode ; Very good dark shadow detail ; 2D to 3D conversion - interesting ; 3D can be played as 2D ;...
A more noticable than most amount of stuttering on slow pans of a scene at apparently a certain speed or speed (24 fps content) (only seen on two different scenes so far) ; Remote control's range is good, but could be a bit further ; Black levels not...
I could live with one of these. When not watching 2D, I'd watch tons of 3D content, but I'd still wish for a usable 2000 lumens for 3D

Sony's premium end 1080p with 3D capability is great in 2D, and not quite as solid at the moment in 3D...

Sony's new projector has been built from the ground up with 3D in mind. But that's not enough to impress us.
Excellent build quality ; Superb 2D performance ; Runs very quietly
Crosstalk with 3D ; Lack of brightness with 3D ; Looks very expensive vs JVC's X3
We’ve moaned before about Sony treading its own path too much when it comes to picture calibration tools, and it appears from the VW90ES that the brand is continuing to ignore us! For while you can adjust the gamma curve and white balance settings, and...

3D as the director intended it to be shown

Sony brings the thrills of big-screen 3D home
Terrific 2D performance ; low operational noise ; extensive user control ; deep immersive 3D
No THX preset ; can't quite get rid of all crosstalk
Overall, the VPL-VW90ES should be considered a marvellous projector. It's beautifully built and delivers both corking 2D and genuinely involving three-dimensional imagery.

At first glance it looks horribly expensive, but the Sony VPL-VW90ES offers the best 3D picture we've seen, and is easy to set up too
Motorised lens makes set-up easy ; fully specified, Full HD 3D projector ; best 3D picture we’ve seen ; looks good in 2D, too
Not entirely flawless ; 2D performance can be bettered for the money
For the money-no-object, 3D-early-adopter, look no further; and for everyone else it remains mighty tempting

Many TV addicts are sceptical of domestic 3D. There's just not enough content available to compensate for the general inconvenience of having to wear special glasses, particularly if you like to multitask. Surfing on a laptop or snarfing custard creams...
