Yamaha RX-V663 review: Yamaha RX-V663

Yamaha RX-V663

Excellent sound quality; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; Sirius- and XM-ready; control iPod onscreen using USB port; two switched AC outlets.

Only two HDMI inputs, while competing models offers offer three or more; analog upconversion limited to 480p; poor upconversion quality; autosetup gave us an inaccurate warning; frustrating rear panel layout.

The Yamaha RX-V663 sounds great, but it's tough to recommend with its paltry HDMI connectivity, poor upconversion quality, and other design quirks.

Yamaha RX-V663 A/V Receiver Overview

Both decode all the latest audio formats including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS HD. Both have HDMI 1.3 inputs and plenty of analogue connections (including 3 in / 1 out component video). Both have 17 surround modes, YPAO auto calibration,...

UltimateAVmag.com: Yamaha RX-V663 A/V Receiver

New technologies have a way of becoming less expensive over a shorter period of time with each passing year. Case in point-the RX-V663 A/V receiver from Yamaha, which provides a complete 7.1-channel system (95Wpc) with some of the most advanced...

Good performance of onboard Dolby TrueHD decoding, Includes DTS-HD Master Audio decoding

Access to different types of media (XM, Sirius, iPod, Bluetooth), Only two HDMI inputs, Lackluster audio performance with auto setup, required a lot of manual tweaking

On the surface, the Yamaha RX-V663 should be a terrific deal, offering support for HDMI 1.3a and the newest audio formats. At a mere $550, I wish I could give it better marks. However, the consumer-electronics industry moves quickly, and in the short...

Yamaha RX-V663 A/V Receiver

Perhaps the most important of these features is the ability to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, the new lossless audio codecs now being used on Blu-ray discs. Can such an inexpensive receiver really deliver the sonic goods? That's what I...

Yamaha RX-V663 AV Receiver

My home theater hobby started when buying my first independent receiver, the Sony STR-DG 810. This was a simple starter receiver for me because it would pass audio and video through HDMI. As I played around with the settings more and more, I realized I...

A great 7.2 AV Receiver

I was one of the first ones to get this receiver (Feb.of '08) after much research on most of the other brand names in this price range. It was important for me to get one that wasn't a nightmare to set up and use. I also wanted a newer HDTV savvy...

Great Value

This is a great base for a HT setup. The only thing to consider is the upconversion to 1080P. That's what the 863 does. But if you don't need the upconversion or don't bother with old analog sources, or have an upconverter this is a gem for the price.

I am very happy with this product

I bought this Yamaha after trying an Onkyo receiver that I was totally disappointed with. But this Yamaha blows the competition away. The sound quality is excellent and very user friendly. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.
