Music to go: Altec Lansing iM4

Altec Lansing's versatile iM4 portable-speaker set folds into the size of a modest book but delivers big in the sound department. Better yet, you can use it with any portable audio device--not just the iPod.

Excellent sound; portable music players fit nicely on the rubberized base; retractable minijack cord; speakers tilt at any angle; can be powered with batteries.

No remote control; slightly large and heavy compared with other small speaker sets.

The Altec Lansing iM4 finally delivers the bass we've been craving in small portable speakers, and they're not iPod-centric, so you can use them with any MP3 player.

The Altec Lansing inMotion iM4 extends the company's popular inMotion line of iPod-compatible speakers to other types of portable music devices, including notebook computers.

The Altec Lansing inMotion iM4 extends the company's popular inMotion line of iPod-compatible speakers to other types of portable music devices, including notebook computers. At 5.5 by 10 by 1 inches, the iM4 is a lot bigger than an iPod, but it can...

Altec Lansing iM4 speaker system

As hard to believe as it may seem, not everyone has an iPod. Thus, personal sound systems such as the iM3 or the original InMotion are not necessarily the best personal speaker system for everyone. This is exactly where the iM4 comes into play.

But if you don't have an iPod and/or want the somewhat better sound, and/or do have an iPod but also want to play CD players and things like that, then the iM4 is a great set of personal speakers to enjoy your sound player with.

For those of us who have spent any time traveling on business trips, entertainment is a must. Anything we can take with us to make the

Roadworthy international power adapter ; Good value ; Small, lightweight footprint ; Excellent sound quality

Lightweight plastic appears thin ; Multiple inputs equals a mix of music ; No protection from input distortion

Altec Lansing InMotion IM4 review

A compact, foldaway speaker system that offers good-quality sound, but without any great ability to go to loud volumes

Impressive sound delivery for a small unit ; looks great

Doesn’t go particularly loud

Compact with good sound, but not a party pumper

Great sound and an affordable price tag make these portable speakers a top choice for on-the-go listening.

Excellent sound ; Portable music players fit nicely on the rubberised base ; Retractable minijack cord ; Speakers tilt at any angle ; Can be powered with batteries

No remote control ; Slightly large and heavy compared with other small speaker sets

We were pleasantly surprised by the Altec Lansing inMotion iM4's full-bodied sound. In our experience, fold-up, portable speakers usually can't hack it when it comes to bass (the iM3 comes to mind, actually), but the iM4 delivered rumbling lows and...

MP3 players are great for taking your music away on holiday with you but if you want to share your music, you'll need a handy set of portable speakers.

Not worth the money

I got these to use with my Ipod when travelling, and also to supplement my laptop speakers, but the sound is tinny and vibrating. Not a satisfactory purchase.
