Altec Lansing inMotion IM9

The Altec Lansing inMotion IM9 is the latest in Altec Lansing's now enormous line of iPod speakers. Dubbed the SUV of the line, this ruggedized iPod speaker/dock runs off of AC power or four C batteries. The perfect shape to toss into a backpack, it...

Full sound. Compact size. Rugged. Has video output.

Controls aren't particularly responsive. Audible pop when tracks change. Distorts when you get near top volume. A bit expensive.

The IM9 is powerful enough for nearby listening outdoors and in small rooms indoors but it distorts at higher volumes.

Rugged portable system offers surprisingly big sound.

The Altec Lansing inMotion iM9 offers performance not found in any other portable system for under $200. And its rugged design should help it stand up to the rigors of travel. If you don't need a wireless remote control and your audio tastes tilt...

Impressive sound quality and volume levels for the size ; durable design ; secure iPod storage ; provides ports for audio, video, and data ; includes handy backpack for travel

No remote ; volume buttons difficult to press ; volume very loud on turn-on ; no protection for front of iPod ; heavier than most portable systems

The iM9's limited controls are located on the top of the unit: A power button (which glows purple-blue when the unit is turned on) volume up and down buttons, and an eject button for the system's iPod cradle (see below). Unfortunately, unlike the less...

Altec Lansing inMotion iM9 Mobile Speaker System

Occasionally, we review an accessory that we like, but could have absolutely loved. Altec Lansing's inMotion iM9 Mobile Speaker System ($200) is a prime example - as a heavily rubberized, portable, and $100 cheaper version of Bose's SoundDock (iLounge...

A ruggedized iPod docking speaker system that provides Bose SoundDock-like audio quality and volume at a considerably lower (and commensurately more reasonable) price, along with full battery-powered portability for 24 hours. Attractive black and...

Amplifier hiss is more noticeable at low to low-mid volumes than comparable alternatives. No remote control, so all iPod/volume control must be handled up close, limiting safe access to its top volume levels. While ruggedized, doesn't offer even...

I have not noticed the hissing between the tracks but I have noticed a popping or crackling which is really audible between most of the tracks and it is really distracting. I may have to return it

Altec Lansing inMotion iM9

Looking more industrial than innovative, the Altec Lansing inMotion iM9 joins an ever-growing list of iPod-compatible speakers.

Portable and durable. Can accommodate most iPods. Has an auxiliary line-in for other audio sources. Comes with a backpack.

No remote. Some design flaws, such as clunky to use buttons and no handle. Only so-so sound quality.

The Altec Lansing inMotion iM9's will find favour with those looking for a portable and durable set of speakers for their iPods. Just don't expect top shelf sound quality.

Altec Lansing iM9

One of the fastest-growing sectors of the electronics market is the ?portable? speaker designed specifically for the iPod. If you want great sound and don't want to be tethered to your headphones, look no further than Altec Lansing?s InMotion iM9.

Many of the best names in loudspeaker technology have entered the speaker market for the iPod. Names like Bose, Klipsch and Altec Lansing are known for speakers and headphones and now, for iPod systems

no like it

Rugged and portable with good sound? Great concept. Too bad they didn't pay any attention to details. Nano doesn't fit because the plastic adapter is way off. And why they boosted the bass so high and didn't include a way to tone it down is beyond me.

Portable, rugged.

Doesn't fit 1st or 2nd gen nano's (i can't imagine it would fit 3rd either). Way too much bass.
