Dell Venue 8 7000 review: thin design, great screen, gimmicky camera

Engadget doesn't review many tablets anymore. When it comes to Android devices, we're far more likely to write about phablets, those supersized smartphon

Well-built, very slim design ; Long battery life ; Stunning screen ; The first tablet with Intel's RealSense 3D camera setup

It's too easy to accidentally obstruct the speaker and rear camera ; Despite Intel's RealSense technology, the actual image quality is mediocre

Dell's flagship Venue 8 tablet is thin and well-made with a stunning screen and long battery life. It's one of the best Android slates you can buy, but we'd like it even more if the image quality from the camera were better -- and if it weren't so easy...

Dell Venue 8 7000 review

Dell's latest Venue easily lays claim to the title of best Android tablet, and even challenges the iPad Mini.

In the past, Dell has made average tablets for very low prices. The Venue 8 7840 is a wonderful exception to the rule, and a truly amazing tablet. It’s the best-looking Android tablet I’ve ever used, and second in performance only to the Nexus 9. It...

Dell Venue 8 7000 review

The Dell Venue 8 7000 is more than just the current titleholder of The World's Thinnest Tablet. It also has a lot of power packed into its thin profile, such as its Intel RealSense stereoscopic camera, the first I've seen on a tablet.

The Dell Venue 8 7000 is remarkably thin and lightweight with a comfortable feel. The Intel RealSense depth-sensing camera is an innovative feature and the preloaded Dell Gallery efficiently works as a central hub for photos. Its storage capacity...

There's a learning curve to using the depth-sensing camera and the photo-editing software. The tablet can get hot during long periods of use.

With its powerful 3D camera and strong image editing features the Dell Venue 8 7000 makes the strongest case yet for tablet photography.

Dell's super thin, aluminum Venue 8 7000 is a surprisingly solid Android tablet

Android tablets have had a rough go of things since the very beginning. For years, Android tablet makers were chasing one bad idea after another, until Google landed on the Nexus 7 and actually...

Great build quality, unique design ; Sharp, bright display ; Fast performance ; Long battery life

Depth camera is a gimmick ; Standard camera disappoints ; Design doesn't always work ergonomically ; Interface and apps don’t make the best use of the large, hi-res display

Venue 8 7000

The Dell Venue 8 7000 is a statement product. Hey world, it says: remember that company that made crappy laptops you hated seven years ago? Well, it can make great things now.

Dell Venue 8 7000 review: A thin, light tablet with a weird depth-sensing camera

A stunning tablet only slightly marred by the inclusion of Intel's first-generation RealSense depth camera.

Stunningly gorgeous OLED display ; Extremely light, and thinner than an iPad Air 2

Color distortion in the OLED display at lowest brightness ; Intel still seems to be figuring out what RealSense is useful for

If you're teetering between an iPad and an Android tablet, give the Venue 8 7000 a try. But if you're a seasoned Android user, there are more powerful, better looking tablets out there.

Dell Venue 8 7000

The Dell Venue 8 7000 looks terrific on paper, but several odd design choices make this 8-inch tablet much less usable than it should be.

Slimmest tablet currently available. Gorgeous build. Front-facing speakers. Sharp screen.

Poor cameras. Bizarre design for using cameras. Performance doesn't live up to the spec sheet.

Comparisons and Conclusions I'm very frustrated here, as the Dell Venue 8 7000 is one of those gadgets that doesn't deliver in person what it promises on paper. Yes, it's the most beautiful tablet available today. But the camera location is downright...

Dell Venue 8 (2014)

While it won't win any speed awards, the Dell Venue 8's full HD display and low price make it a good value for multimedia tablets.

Inexpensive. Full HD display. Runs stock Android.

Excessive bloatware. Slow performance at times.

Conclusion In the 8-inch tablet realm, budget and full HD were once mutually exclusive; you'd typically expect to pay up to $400 for that privilege. Spending that much will still get you a great tablet, like the Editors' Choice Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4...

The Dell Venue 8 7000 Series Review

Five years ago, the first of what we would call modern tablet computers were released to the world. What is now an entire product category was originally seen with massive skepticism by many consumers, analysts, and journalists. Even those who had high...

While I could go on and on and compare every aspect of the Venue 8 to other tablets, I think the data speaks for itself. The build quality is much better than that of the Nexus 9, there's no question about that. However, in every other aspect it either...
