Offering the ideal balance of size, performance, and price, the iPad Air 2 remains a solid value for everyday users, even as the 9.7-inch iPad Pro takes on the mantle of best iPad ever made.

iPad Air review: This older tablet is still a winner

In 2013, Apple gave the full-size iPad a makeover, with a thinner, lighter design based on the Mini's, and the same innards as in the iPhone 5S.

The iPad Air delivers solid performance and battery life in an attractive and impossibly thin-and-light package. The front-facing camera delivers excellent FaceTime capabilities and the Retina Display is top-notch.

No Touch ID fingerprint scanner, meaning you’ll have to type in a passcode with every unlock and a password with every purchase.

Imbued with first class design and aesthetics, within the full-size tablet universe, the iPad Air is second only to its newer sibling, the Air 2.

The new iPad Air gets an improved A8X processor, better rear and front-facing cameras, an even thinner and lighter design, an anti-reflective screen, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and more built-in storage at higher configurations than last year.

The Air 2 isn't a big change from last year's iPad in terms of overall function; battery life remains the same, although its battery life is already pretty good. Audio playback via speakers makes the thin metal body resonate more than before.

The iPad Air 2 is a nice refinement and finesse of last year's model, with a bevy of tweaks, enhancements, a much faster processor, and the welcome addition of Touch ID. Simply put: it's still the gold standard for tablets.

Apple iPad Air 2

The iPad Air 2 balances seamless ease of use, app abundance, and raw power in its ever-so-slender frame, continuing Apple's reign atop the tablet heap.

Very thin and light. Extremely fast processor. Best app design and selection of any platform. Cellular models can be switched between wireless carriers in software.
