The latest Spectre X2 offers plenty of refinement over the last model, but HP still needs to fix its battery and touchpad issues.

HP Spectre x2 (2017)

With its subtle design improvements and good value proposition, the HP Spectre x2 is a good, if not revolutionary, update to this line of 2-in-1 detachable-hybrid tablets.

3,000-by-2,000 resolution screen. Comes with keyboard and pen. Sturdy keyboard cover. Two USB-C ports. Powerful Core i7 processor with Iris Plus graphics.

HP Spectre x2 review: more imitation than innovation

HP's latest 2-in-1 convertible is improved, but doesn't match up to the Surface Pro

Comes with a great keyboard and pen ; Thin, handsome design ; Bright, high-resolution display

It costs less than a Surface Pro and beats it on performance, usability, and price

Performance well above expectations at this price level. Incredible detail packed into a superbright display. Rock solid stability.

HP's Spectre x2 feels like a flashy gift box -- with socks inside

HP's 2017 Spectre x2 has a lovely, well-executed design but battery life and performance lag behind the competition.

The 2017 HP Spectre x2 two-in-one has an elegant yet functional design, with a great keyboard, a bright, sharp screen with a decent stylus and above-average sound for a tablet.

Lackluster battery life and performance.

If you like your two-in-one pretty and sufficient for streaming video, lots of typing, ink-based markup or casual sketching in proximity to a power outlet, the HP Spectre x2 hits the mark.

HP's Spectre x2 2-in-1 swings for the fences with its Kaby Lake chip, 2K display and Iris Plus graphics, but it falls short in a few areas.

The HP Spectre x2 has a slim but sturdy design and a stiffer keyboard than Microsoft's similar Surface Pro, plus the keyboard cover is included in the base price. A mobile broadband antenna allows for easy on-the-go data.

The kickstand is hard to operate, the processors are slower than many other premium hybrids, and battery life is merely OK.

HP Spectre x2 review: A Surface clone for a lot less cash

The Spectre x2 has touch. It has pen support. It has the same cover-style keyboard. But there are differences compared to the Surface Pro 4, and we dive deep into them here.

Good bang for the buck ; More stable keyboard

CPU performance lags Core i5 ; Battery life just average

So is the Spectre x2 a better Surface than the Surface Pro 4? I had high hopes, but it looks like Microsoft's higher-end components are paying off.
