Sony VAIO Tap 11 review: meet Sony's answer to the Surface Pro

At $800 with a keyboard included, the Tap 11 seems tempting. However, to hit that aggressive price, Sony compromised on build quality and also settled for weak starting specs.

When we learned that the Tap 11 came standard with a Pentium processor and not a fourth-generation Core chip, we were forced to rewrite parts of this review: the review card and even the conclusion you're reading now. Had Sony started at $800 with a...

This super-svelte Ultrabook/tablet hybrid comes with sharp looks, impressive specs—and a host of design and usability shortcomings.

Thinnest, lightest Ultrabook on the market ; Vivid display readable even from the side ; Solid benchmark performances

Nearly impossible to use on your lap ; Mediocre battery life ; Display sometimes slow to respond to orientation changes ; Screen prone to glare

Sony VAIO Tap 11

The Sony VAIO Tap 11 might be the best looking tablet PC we've reviewed, but while the tablet is attractive, the performance leaves something to be desired.

Slim and stylish design. Wireless keyboard cover. Adjustable kickstand. Includes digitizer pen and apps for handwritten note taking and pen-compatible screen clipping.

Modest performance and battery life.

While the Sony VAIO Tap 11 doesn't offer the best performance in the PC tablet category, it does have the distinction of being one of the thinnest, lightest tablets I've seen. Combine the lightweight design with fairly good battery life, and the VAIO...

Sony Vaio Tap 11 review

Windows 8 has inspired plenty of strange notebook designs, from the swiveling screen on the Dell XPS 12 to the flexible Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga. But Microsoft's own Surface tablet is the beacon for...

Extremely thin and light ; Beautiful display ; Surprisingly good keyboard

Mediocre build quality ; Can't connect keyboard when using tablet ; Needs deeper pen integration

We're getting closer, but we're not there yet

Sony Vaio Tap 11: Slimmer, lighter than Surface Pro 2

This Core i5 Windows 8 tablet outshines the competition, but won't sit in your lap.

The ; has a full Core i5 CPU, but is thinner than Microsoft's similar Surface Pro 2 and weighs less. A keyboard cover and active stylus are included in the price.

The slender kickstand and free-floating keyboard cover don't work well on laps or other uneven work spaces. Battery life could be better.

Sony's thin, powerful Tap 11 tablet shows up the competition in terms of design. It's not ideal for everyone, but only a few tweaks away from being the runaway leader in this smallish category.

Sony Vaio Tap 11 review

It's been nearly one year, but we still point to Microsoft's Surface Pro as the best example of a full Windows 8 tablet with a high-res screen and an Intel Core i-series CPU. That configuration makes for an experience much closer to a full-power PC,...

Sony VAIO Tap 11 Review

Sony knows how to make a good looking tablet. Flush from the success of the XPERIA Tablet Z, the company has borrowed the same slimline aesthetic for a Windows 8 version, the Sony VAIO Tap 11. It's the thinnest full-Windows tablet around with a proper...

Sony expects the VAIO Tap 11 to hit store shelves in late-October, by which point Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2 will have just had time to begin filtering out to tableteers. Only time will tell how the two compare, but that’s something we’ll be looking at...

Sony Vaio Tap 11 Review

Sony's engineering chops are really showing this year, across its phones, tablets and convertibles portfolio. The Vaio Tap 11 is just the next in the line of slim, sexy looking devices Sony churns out, and as far as Windows tablets go, it can brag with...

Slimmest, lightest design of a full-size Windows 8 tablet ; Very good 1080p display ; Included Active Pen stylus and magnetic keyboard cover

Battery life is on the short side for a Haswell device ; Thin kickstand only lets you prop the tablet on a desk

Vaio Tap 11 is one of the most evolved instances of the new device breed that became possible with Microsoft's touch-friendly Windows 8, coupled with the frugal Haswell processor family of Intel. It is incredibly thin and light for an 11” Windows...

Sony VAIO Tap 11 Tablet Review

According to the company, this is the “thinnest” slate available on the market today and, by the looks of it, Sony built it to provide direct competition to Microsoft's Surface Pro. The design is really classy and light, and the slate can be handled...

Review: Sony Vaio Tap 11 - The Windows 8 tablet to beat

When you pick up Sony's Vaio Tap 11, you can't help but feel that it is a direct competitor to Microsoft's Surface line of devices. A few different OEMs have already tried to cut out their spot with devices similar to the Surface, but none have yet to...
