Sony A7R II review

Sony's feature-packed A7R II is the best camera of 2015.

42.4MP BI full-frame sensor – industry first ; 4K movies ; ISO up to 102,400 ; Can autofocus some Canon lenses (via adapter) ; Five-axis image stabilization

LCD non-touch capable ; EVF has slight lag

Whether it’s photos or videos that you enjoy shooting, the A7R II is a very complex, but terrific all-around camera. It is the best new camera of 2015. We believe any enthusiast photographer will be extremely pleased with its extensive capabilities,...

Sony Alpha a7R II Review

The Sony a7R II is a 42MP full frame mirrorless camera with 5-axis image stabilization, featuring the world's first (and currently only) 35mm BSI CMOS sensor, and including a hybrid autofocus system and 4K video capabilities. It's the fifth in the...

Class-leading low light Raw performance, thanks to the first-ever BSI full-frame CMOS ; Impressive dynamic range in Raw, even at high ISO ; Dramatically improved JPEGs, with sophisticated sharpening and well-controlled noise reduction ; DRO and S-Log2...

No direct AF point control ; Lock-on AF still remains unpredictable and often unreliable ; Camera focuses stopped down in AF-C, often crippling AF at small apertures or in low light ; Eye-AF and Lock-on AF not available with 3rd party lenses, nor in...

The a7R II brings 42MP stills and 4K video to a small, lightweight body. Electronic shutter and in-body image stabilization make for high quality images and video you'll work harder to get, if you get it at all, from comparable DSLRs. BSI-CMOS gives...

Sony Alpha 7R II

The Sony Alpha 7R II is a full-frame mirrorless camera that delivers absolutely incredible image and video quality, but it will cost you.

Excellent 42-megapixel image sensor. Superb high ISO imaging. In-body image stabilization. 5fps continuous shooting. Hybrid autofocus system. Hinged rear display. Excellent EVF. Dust- and moisture-resistant design. 4K video capture.

Expensive. Omits PC sync socket. Overly sensitive eye sensor. No built-in flash.

Conclusions The Sony Alpha 7R II is a worthy update to its predecessor. It improves upon image quality, adds in-body image stabilization, offers improved EVF magnification, adds 4K video, and is more comfortable in the hand. But it comes at a pretty...

Sony Alpha A7R II

In the newly reignited war over resolution in pro cameras, Sony's A7R II slips in at 42 megapixels, right between the Canon 5DS R 's 50MP and the Nikon D810 's 36MP. But the camera doesn't really need to claim highest resolution to stand out in the...

For the most part, the Sony A7R II delivers terrific photo and video quality in a compact, well-designed body.

Terrible battery life and a mushy shutter mechanism may negatively impact your shooting experience. Also, there's general highlight clipping in still photos and artifacts in some high-ISO-sensitivity shots that we hope Sony can improve via a firmware...

It needs a little more refinement, but overall the Sony A7R II is a great camera for folks who need a high-resolution full-frame model in a more compact design than a dSLR.

Sony Alpha 7R II First impressions review

42 is a good number - as well as being the answer to life, the universe and everything, it's also the number of millions of photodiodes that Sony has packed onto the sensor of its new a7R II.

With the Sony Alpha a7R II, we get another one of Sony's superb full frame mirrorless cameras in all their photo and video-capable glory, except with this particular shooter, what you get your hands on is the very top of the Sony 4K mirrorless lineup....

Camera Review: Sony A7R II

Sony's a7R II has more pixels, higher-resolution video and 5-axis image stabilization. What's not to love?

Excellent image quality; extensive feature set; 5-axis image stabilization; fast and accurate AF; good noise performance at high ISOs

Relatively slow buffer clearing; slow start-up; rolling shutter in 4K crop mode; pricey

Overall, the a7R II generally met or exceeded our expectations. It’s a solid camera and will make an excellent addition to the gear bag of any photographer who’s looking for a high resolution, high quality but compact mirrorless camera. The a7R II is a...
