Sony DVP-NS575 review: Sony DVP-NS575

Sony's slim and silver DVD If you own a regular 4:3 non-wide-screen TV, chances are it's not capable of accepting a progressive-scan signal . But progressive-scan is so common these days among inexpensive DVD players, such as Sony's DVP-NS575P/S, that...

Slim look; excellent anamorphic downconversion for 4:3 TVs; compatible with many disc types.

Below-average MP3 and JPEG capability; somewhat spotty progressive-scan processing.

Sony's budget model makes up in style and 4:3-friendliness what it lacks in progressive prowess.

DVP-NS575P

DVD+/- R/RW readability: The NS-325 could read these discs fine, but it was sometimes finicky with material made the hard way by TMPGEnc. Sometimes it would freeze right after a layer pause that was removed, or it wouldn't play the DVD's audio. (My...

Improved readability of DVR-R/RW & +R/RW discs ; Layer change is almost instantaneous ; No chroma upsampling error in interlaced mode ; Precision Drive 3 is excellent at reading troublesome discs ; Separate black level settings for component and...

Fairly average deinterlacer; doesn't work well with poorly encoded material ; No optical digital output ; Takes longer to load a disc than last year's model (NS-325) ; Chroma upsampling error exists in progressive mode, but is hidden by a filter ;...

Sony DVP-NS575P

The Sony site doesn't appear to have a link for the P version, but I'm guessing it's just the black case instead of the silver one.

Plays nearly anything, according to the manual ; Very thin design ; Good menu design

Doesn't support playback of MPEG video files ; JPEG playback seems to assume 4:3 aspect, so if you have a slide show, it will be stretched. I haven't investigated this any further ; It's a little slow from turn on to playback

This small component has quite a punch!

Great picture, component video output, progressive scan

Small size could mean lack of quality/durability, a little pricey

Great Entry Level DVD Player

First, I believe this model as of 2/2006 is discontinued, so you will probably only find it on eBay and the liquidators these days. I got mine on eBay from a dealer who specializes in RMA's (customer returns) and who supposedly tests them fully before ...

Many great features, plays VCD's too, remote works Sony TV's, handles marginal discs well

Only has s-video and component outputs, some buttons on remote too sensitive, flimsy cabinet

Engineered junk

None.

Units only built to last warranty period, then expire. And Sony offers no help.
