Yamaha DVD-S2300 MK2 Universal DVD/SACD Player Review

We are at a bit of a crossroads in technology right now as some of the digital rights management rules change and digital transmission of DVD-Audio and SACD finally become a reality. As of right now

Superlative playback performance of CD, SACD, DVD-A and DVD-Video with DCDi 480p output ; Bass management & digital delay compensation for DVD-A ; Separate bass management for SACD ; Excellent build quality

Doesn't retain last played DVD/CD track when unit is powered down ; Limited bass management crossover options ; No digital video output options ; No digital audio output options for ; DVD-A or SACD (Standards not available at time of manufacture) ; No...

Players/Recorders: SACD & DVD-A Players: Yamaha DVD-S2300

So-called ''universal'' players that will play anything on a 5'' disc have so far been a better idea than a reality as far as quality playback is concerned. Ironically, as simple as SACD's DSD stream is reputed to be on the decoding side (Sony makes...

Yamaha DVD-S2300

Yamaha's soundly built player delivers great sonics and its video quality is a step above the competition's.

Universal DVD-Audio/SACD playerSuperb soundExtensive bass-management facilitiesExcellent Genesis/Faroudja DCDi video processing with 3:2 pull-down

ExpensiveDoesn't automatically play SACDs with best soundLackluster remoteConvoluted setup

In our video-quality tests, we enjoyed similarly good results. We looked at the gamut of test patterns on a 155cm Samsung DLP rear projection TV, and the S2300 equaled that TV's excellent processing. That's not a surprise since both devices have...

Yamaha DVD-S2300

From the outside the Yamaha looks like any other DVD player, finished in black with all the basic controls out front, compete with a display featuring garish DVD and SACD indicators that light up like the neon under a boyracer's car. There's a full set...

As a replacement disk player for our two channel music system the Yamaha does a competent job with good CD performance, better performance with DVD-Audio, but only okay with SACD and has a few ergonomic glitches. This player would make a good...

Nice, heavy equipment, well laid out front panel, comprehensive outputs, fabulous image and sound quality.

Remote window quite narrow - only about 30 degrees either side of horizontal or vertical.

Yamaha DVD-S2300 DVD Player

While the war between DVD-A and SACD rages on and on and on, the electronics manufacturers have taken a new approach to dealing with this issue and instead of limiting themselves or aligning themselves to just one or the other, many manufacturers are...

Superb video quality, excellent audio, comparatively great price, bass management

Hybrids are still expensive, not quite audiophile quality (but very close)

"at $900, a phenomenal value!!!"

The previous reviewer paid a high price, perhaps as soon as it was released. Today the DVD-S2300 Mk2, an updated version of this player w/ several upgrades, is ~$900US. This is amazing because this universal player, with usual high Yamaha design and...

"Great sound, price to high."

The real down side for me is lack of power standby and no progresive scan on Australian models. The 2300 Mk2 has a standby facility but this model was not released in Australia.

Product Specifications

Yamaha expands its line of high performance DVD player with a new model that offers SACD playback as well. The DVD-S2300 is capable of playing both DVDs and CDs, including DVD-Audio and Video discs, SACDs (Super Audio CDs), VCDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and CDs recorded with MP3 files. Outstanding features include Progressive Scanning with DCDi Processing, independent DVD-Audio and SACD circuits, DTS and Dolby Digital decoders, Bass Management processing and Video Off mode. The DVD-S2300 is an ideal companion for mid and high price range home theater amplifiers and receivers. The DVD-S2300 delivers sound quality that is superior to other players in its class and even to some more expensive players for a number of reasons. It uses high performance SACD DACs for all channels and a 192kHz/24-bit DVD-Audio DAC. The SCD and DVD-Audio circuits are completely independent and optimized for each format (the SACD circuit is extremely simple and straight). This guarantees highest quality with both types of disc. A Video Off mode can be selected to ensure that no interference from the video circuitry can affect the sound. Other features that contribute to high sound quality are independent digital and analog power circuits and transformers, a large disc stabilizer and anti-resonance double top and bottom covers. DVD-Audio and SCD (Super Audio CD) are new audio formats that offer stereo and multichannel (surround) sound with higher quality and greater sonic realism than ordinary CDs. They can also provide extra content like artist information and lyrics. Availability of these types of discs is increasing, although titles are not always released in both. But with the DVD-S2300, you do not have to choose between them-this player will play both. Video displays use two type of scanning systems: interlaced and progressive. In brief, progressive scans twice as fast as interlaced, providing a superior picture with less flicker and other distortion. The DVD-S2300 has a progressive scan processor built in, so progressive video images can be viewed on a digital TV or monitor. It also offers DCDi, a processing technique that eliminates the jagged edges that generally appear in moving images when interlaced video is converted to progressive. DCDi makes a clearly visible difference and is a very desirable feature. The DVD-S2300 provides Bass Management processing and a subwoofer/bass management output terminal. Bass management is important for DVD-Audio and SACD multichannel playback, as it properly routes the bass frequencies for best performance from a multi-speaker home theater system. With normal 2-channel (stereo) CDs, the bass frequencies are routed to the subwoofer, so listeners can enjoy 2.1-channel sound with more powerful bass. The DVD-S2300 uses a new multi-bit delta sigma DAC that features performance superior to that of the previous types, as well as a dynamic range of over 120dB. The DVD-S2300 maximizes the potential of DVD audio by using this high performance DAC for all channels. Recording songs onto CD-R/RW/VCD disc using computer and digital recorders is becoming more popular. The DVD-S2300 will play these discs, so you have an additional source of new music. It will also play discs recorded with MP3 files, which because they are compressed, can provide about 12 hours of music per disc. The DVD-S2300 has 5.1 Channel Audio Output Terminals, a Bass Management Terminal, Mixed 2-Channel Audio Output Terminals, Optical and Coaxial Digital Audio Output Terminals, Progressive Component Video Output Terminals and a Remote Control In/Out and an RS-232 port for Extended IR Code for Custom installation. The Inlet-Type Power Cable is separate, rather than attached to the unit. It is a thicker type than usual, for higher power handling capacity. Resume play allows you to interrupt a movie to go to a feature and then pick up the movie where you left off with 5-Disc Memory.
