Planon System Solutions DocuPen R700 review: Planon System Solutions DocuPen R700

Planon DocuPen R700 The Planon DocuPen R700 won't win any imaging-quality awards, but if you absolutely must scan documents on the road, this is a handy device to pack in your bag. We have to admit, there are definitely instances where being able to...

Easy to use; ultraportable; scans fast.

Poor scan quality; expensive; doesn't work with Macs; scans in black and white only; text is illegible at small sizes; middling OCR software.

If you need an ultralight scanner that slips inside a deep pocket, dig deep into those pockets to splurge on the DocuPen.

Docupen R-700 Rechargeable, Portable Scanner Review

DocuPen R-700

Too fast, too slow; there's no "just right" with the DocuPen

Completely portable, recharegable Lithium- Ion battery, lightweight at 2oz.

Below-average quality scans, poor Mac support, have to hold down pinching power button to use.

A different scanner

PC Plus review: Planon DocuPen R700

The DocuPen is just about good enough for capturing blocks of text as images but, from our tests, it's very difficult to get accurate OCR transcriptions from books or magazines, which is surely one of its main uses.

DocuPen R700 review

Billed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's smallest scanner, the DocuPen has a lot to live up to. The length of an A4 piece of paper and the width of a standard HB pencil you can't disagree on the size, but does that mean a lack of quality?...

Capture pages on the move, rechargeable battery via USB

Only scans in mono, only works with PCs, only two low res scanning modes

Really just a portable photocopier, you might struggle to justify the purchase

Planon - DocuPen R700

A scanner is an A4-sized gadget which sits on your desk and breaks the spine of any book you try to scan pages from, right? It's permanently connected to your PC and is too bulky to ...

This is so nearly a great evolution of the scanner. It's independent, stores images itself and recharges through any USB port. The only problem is that it's hard to OCR images and impossible to know at scan-time if your scans are rubbish.

There is a lot to love and hate about this scanner. You'll love the fact that you can scan documents anywhere, without having your computer with you, on battery power. You'll hate the quality of the scans. You'll love how fast it is to use, even ...

Product Specifications

Planon introduces the DocuPen R700, a handheld scanner that operates on batteries for full portability purposes. The DocuPen is capable of storing up to 100 pages into memory and takes approximately 4 to 8 seconds per page. The DocuPen is different from other pen scanners in that it scans a FULL PAGE width and therefore scans the entire page including text and graphics in just 4 seconds. Other handheld and pen scanners only scan single lines of text or records handwriting and cannot scan graphics making them much less practical. In comparison, the DocuPen is truly a breakthrough in technological development because it fully realizes the potential of what other pen size scanners tried to accomplish. The need for convenient out of office scanning is enormous but has not been satisfied because the products to date did not fulfill that need adequately. As the fax evolved from the telex, to successfully satisfy its communication need, the DocuPen is the practical solution to the pen scanners finally opening the market for wide spread acceptance.
