A slick and feature-packed Blu-ray/PVR combination.
Versatile recording and slick operation ; Extensive features ; Excellent Blu-ray and Freeview images
Freeview EPG & catch-up TV could be integrated ; Clunky web browsing with remote ; Takes too long to reach AllShare content
The sockets continue on the rear with HDMI v1.4 and optical digital outputs, Ethernet, another USB port and RF input and loopthrough. There are no Scarts for backing up hard-disk recordings on external disc recorders, which might disappoint those who...

The BD-F8500 is a 3D Blu-ray player and Freeview PVR in a single slim-line box, ideal for those who want to cut down on clutter. Furthermore, it incorporates Samsung's online portal, blessed with the best selection of VOD content on the market – it's...
Generous features; catch-up TV; solid picture quality; flexible recording
Long-winded Allshare menus; awkward web browsing; Smart and Freeview functionality could be better integrated

Samsung's BD-F8500 is like a Swiss Army Knife: not only does it pack in a Blu-ray player with 3D skills, but it's also toting a 500GB hard drive for recording Freeview in HD and you can even use your smartphone as a remote. The question is though, is...

Stylish box.
No "find" in the guide rendering it practically useless. Difficult to get to recorded content. Recorded content screen takes over 6 seconds to load each time. Unit has a mind of it own - pause a program and if a recording is about to start it un-pauses.

Lots if tech for your buck. Picture quality really is going.
Working out the menu paths isn't as intuitive is would have expected. I have to have the volume quite high on playback, so when I switch back to tv and forget it's really loud.

It does everything, very well!
No back button on remote, ergonomics of remote could be better, volume control doesn't work. Not supplied with HDMI cable
