Kodak PlaySport Zx5 review: Kodak PlaySport Zx5

Kodak PlaySport Zx5

The waterproof/shockproof ; produces very good video quality for its price and size, is easy to use, and has good editing/sharing software.

The PlaySport doesn't have a built-in USB connector, there's no flash or video light, and the battery can't be removed.

The rugged Kodak PlaySport Zx5 is a very good minicamcorder, but falls just shy of improving on last year's model, despite being more durable.

Kodak PlaySport Zx5 review

Editors' note: Kodak has issued a firmware update for the PlaySport Zx5 that prevents it from "freezing" or "locking up" during video capture or review, and enables the use of Class 10 SDHC and SDHC UHS-1 memory cards.

The PlaySport doesn't have a built-in USB connector, there's no flash or video light, and the battery can't be removed.

Kodak Playsport Zx5 Video Camera

If you want to record video outdoors, at the beach, or anywhere else there's water, the compact Kodak Playsport Zx5 pocket camcorder is a top choice.

Lens offers autofocus capability. Good video quality. Water- and drop-proof. Simple to operate. Storage is expandable. Easy media sharing with social-networking sites.

No integrated storage, requires SD cards. Lacks a built-in USB connector. Battery isn't removable. Small, low-res LCD.

Kodak PlaySport Zx5 Review

Last month we tried out the Kodak EasyShare Sport C123, a rugged digital camera that fell well below expectations.

Rough, tough ; Macro mode ; Decent video quality

Small display ; Not good in low-light

One attribute of the PlaySport that Kodak has heavily advertised is its proprietary Share button (a feature also present on the EasyShare Sport). It allows users to designate specific websites to publish pictures and videos to, and supports Facebook,...

Kodak PlaySport Zx5

Instead of beefing up performance or features, Kodak makes small improvements

Good low light performance; Good sharpness for its class; Rugged design

Abysmal color accuracy

With Cisco killing off its Flip camcorder line last month, the ultracompact camcorder market was left with some gaping holes to fill. Kodak’s series of pocket-cams may be poised to take over a chunk of the Flip’s former market, and, we must say, the...

Best pocket HD camcorder

Experts say the Kodak Playsport is the best pocket HD camcorder you can buy. It shoots in full 1080p high-definition, can snap still photos, and it's waterproof to 10 feet -- all features you can't get on any Flip camcorder, including the Flip...

Shoots 1080p HD, waterproof to 10 feet, snaps 5-megapixel still photos, includes HDMI cable and wall charger, inexpensive

No built-in memory, bundled software isn't Mac-compatible, some owners say it leaks underwater

Kodak Playsport Video Camera Review

I have used video cameras for as long as I can remember. My first video camera was one of those really hefty kind that you sat on your shoulder and it used regular VCR tapes. Yeah, and I admitted it. Since then I have used every imaginable type of...

Rugged and solid ; Great price for all these features ; Video quality is excellent

Digital zoom is worthless ; Digital camera options are sorely lacking

Kodak PlaySport

If you're active or like to watch active events, you need a camcorder that can keep up with you and the action.

Do you prefer shooting video or snapping still images? Kodak made plenty of fans with its previous pocket camcorder release, the Zi8, so when the company pulled back the curtain on the next ultracompacket HD camera, hype was in no short supply. Set...

Kodak Playsport Zx5

Kodak's waterproof pocket camcorder range gets tough.

Waterproof to 3m ; Withstands drop from 1.5m ; Full HD shooting

No built-in memory ; Fixed battery ; No backlight compensation setting

The Kodak Playsport Zx3 was already great value for a waterproof pocket Internet camcorder. The Zx5 is around £30 more than the current price for the Zx3, and although it doesn’t add much in the way of extra features, the improved shock rating makes it...
