LG Nexus 5 review: Back to the future

Nexus phone releases are timed to let Google have the last word - and what a way to have it! A phone that matches any flagship on specs and premieres the latest OS version, but costs barely half as much as some of them. The Nexus 5 promises a great...

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support ; Penta-band 3G with HSPA; LTE cat3 ; 4.95" 16M-color 1080p True HD IPS Plus FullHD capacitive touchscreen ; Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display protection ; Android OS v4.4 KitKat ; Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU, 2 GB...

Non-expandable storage ; Poor video and audio codec support out of the box ; Non user-replaceable battery ; Comparatively poor battery life (except for calls) ; Loudspeaker is on the quiet side ; Limited availability at launch

It's a year since Google made a splash with an impressively spec'd smartphone at a bargain price. The Nexus 4 wasn't a financial success perhaps but making a profit off selling hardware is rarely the first thing on Google's mind. The pure Android...

Nexus 5 review: the best phone $350 can buy

When you're shopping for a smartphone, what do you expect to get for less than $400 without a contract? Certainly not a top-of-the-line device, right? Un

Beautiful 1080p display ; Quad-core processor delivers top performance ; Amazing value and price ; Android 4.4 brings welcome software enhancements

Battery life could be better ; Doesn't work on Verizon ; Doesn't offer global LTE

The Nexus 5 offers the best bang for your buck, with amazing specs and the latest OS for a very reasonable price.

Google Nexus 5 (Sprint)

Sprint's Google Nexus 5 remains a blazing-fast, pure Android smartphone with support for the company's budding Spark LTE network, but it's not as good a deal as its unlocked counterpart.

Sprint Spark LTE support. Fast next-generation CPU and GPU. Beautiful full HD display. Android is better than ever with 4.4.1 "KitKat," and the camera is much improved. Solid battery life.

Hardware still isn't quite class-leading on all fronts.

Conclusions When Google took the wraps off the unlocked Nexus 5, the $350 price tag made it a no-brainer for Android enthusiasts unencumbered by carrier contracts. On Sprint, though, it's a bit more complicated. You have two options for buying the...

Google Nexus 5 (Unlocked)

Google has delivered an impressive smartphone with the Nexus 5 from LG, an unlocked powerhouse with a palatable price and solid performance. And the new Android 4.4.1 KitKat update largely fixes the phone's initial camera problems.

Killer price for an unlocked smartphone. Fast next-generation CPU and GPU. Beautiful full HD display. Android is better than ever with 4.4.1 "KitKat," and the camera is much improved. Solid battery life.

Hardware still isn't quite class-leading on all fronts. Middling voice quality through the microphone.

Benchmark scores across the board are very good, thanks to the next-generation system on a chip, and the Nexus 5 positively screams on Browsermark and on 3D tests. Some results still trail the Galaxy Note 3, which has the same processor and GPU but...

Google Nexus 5 is an excellent smartphone and a better value

Google takes its flagship gloves off and makes its Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 KitKat the unlocked handset to beat.

The ; has LTE for multiple carriers, a sleek and solid build, and an excellent price. It makes crystal-clear calls, battery life is long, and integration of Google Now is deep and wide.

The Nexus 5's screen is dimmer than its competitors' and its camera struggles under auto settings. While an important OS update, Android 4.4 KitKat is more conceptual than feature-rich.

Strong performance, high-end specs, and an ultra-affordable price make the Google Nexus 5 not just the best unlocked phone on the market, but the best Nexus phone by far.

Review: Google Nexus 5

The new Nexus 5 from Google is so boring that it almost seems to embrace blandness. And that's a good thing.

OK Google, your voice activation and navigation make for a great Bluetooth co-pilot in my car. Auto-just-about-everything, from photo and video editing, to letting me know the latest scores. Simply the best reading and video viewing experience there is...

Exceedingly slippery. Slow shutter. Slurry images. How did this camera ship

Nexus 5 review

In this review of the Nexus 5, I will attempt to answer one simple question: is Google capable of making a flagship, best-in-class smartphone it can sell for $349 off-contract? And I don't just...

KitKat is a major and welcome update ; Performance on the phone screams ; Gorgeous display

The camera is frustratingly hit or miss ; Battery life was inconsistent ; Hardware design is unexciting

A killer package... once Google fixes this camera

Google Nexus 5 Review

Each year, Google picks a silicon vendor, a hardware partner, and releases a new version of Android running on top of them. The result is a Nexus phone, and for five iterations now that process has repeated, resulting in a smartphone that's the purest...

Review Google Nexus 5 Smartphone

The fifth element. As early as the Nexus 4, Google has offered a price-competitive challenge to the rest of the smartphone manufacturing world. The current hardware flagship puts its direct competitors under powerful pressure, because the Nexus 5...

Price; Android 4.4 KitKat; Workmanship quality; Color fidelity of the display; High display brightness; Updates provided

Storage cannot be upgraded; Non-removable battery; Speaker sound quality

The display and its color fidelity are at the highest level in comparison to other smartphones. We had never seen a mobile device with this kind of convincing panel quality.
