ZTE Axon 7 review: The brightest sound

ZTE is back in the cheap and cheerful flagship race with the Axon 7. The company has its aim set up high, and we can't help but see the OnePlus 3 as a locked target. The thing is, the Axon 7 has a potential to aim for the stars of the show - the Galaxy...

ZTE Axon 7

The ZTE Axon is a $400 unlocked Android phone that looks and performs like phones that cost nearly twice as much.

Relatively affordable. Sleek metal design. Crisp Quad HD display. Booming speakers. Expandable storage. Fingerprint sensor, NFC, and dual-band Wi-Fi. Google Daydream-ready.

Heavy custom UI layer. Low-light camera performance isn't the best.

Conclusions The ZTE Axon 7 is a lot of phone for a lot less money than the competition. For $400 you get a premium metal design, a top-of-the-line processor, a Quad HD display, and support for all the major US carriers. There is no other phone on the...

ZTE Axon 7 review: ZTE's best yet, but no match for the OnePlus 3

In both design and hardware performance, the Axon 7 is ZTE's best phone to date. But there are better alternatives.

The sophisticated and affordable ZTE Axon 7 has a zippy processor, expandable storage and loud speakers.

The phone is heavy and power users won't appreciate the non-removable battery.

The Axon 7 is ZTE's best to date, but the OnePlus 3 is a better phone at the same price.

ZTE Axon 7 Smartphone Review

Heir to the throne? With the Axon 7, ZTE is about to reach for the smartphone crown. Besides top performance and superb equipment, the 5.5-inch, high-end Android impresses with its Dolby Atmos sound system, which can fill a room with sound.

Android 6.0 ; QHD AMOLED panel ; USB Type-C ; fingerprint scanner ; very good camera module ; very high performance ; no throttling ; superb Dolby Surround sound ; Quick Charge feature

Unusual MiFavor 4.0 UI ; USB 2.0 speed only ; PWM flickering ; non-removable battery ; only mediocre battery life

ZTE has not promised too much: The Axon 7 easily matches upper-range smartphones, such as Samsung's Galaxy S7 even if ultimately it cannot quite pull level to such devices. ZTE's smartphone does not have the final feature polishing for this - a faster...

ZTE Axon 7 Review: Affordable Flagship Greatness

I'm still not convinced that the ZTE Axon 7's $399 price tag isn't a typo. This smartphone performs like something that costs hundreds of dollars more, with a fast processor, a rich display and a stunning design that oozes care and quality. The phone's...

Premium, comfortable design ; Vibrant display ; Impressive, feature-rich camera ; Fast performance

Display dimmer than competitors ; Mixed audio performance ; Middling battery life

The ZTE Axon 7 punches well above its weight, delivering fast performance, a feature-rich camera and a stunning design for just $399.

ZTE Axon 7 review: Can’t quite kill the flagship killer

On paper, the ZTE Axon 7 is an impressive phone.

Fantastic sound quality ; Daydream-ready ; Beautiful 5.5-inch display

Unfortunate power button placement ; Occasional processing glitches ; Slow camera shutter speed

ZTE Axon 7 review: Mostly good hardware, but bad software

ZTE has long been known as a purveyor of inexpensive devices—you might even call them cheap. Many phones manufactured by ZTE in past years didn't

Design ; Solid aluminum construction and a rear-facing fingerprint sensor in a comfortable divot. ; Display ; A bright, crisp 1440p AMOLED display that's very good for the price. ; Audio ; The front-facing speakers are fantastic, same for the...

Navigation buttons ; The non-backlit nav buttons are too close together and you can't see them in the dark. ; Fingerprint sensor ; It's not as fast or accurate as other phones in this price range. It also wakes up the phone even when you're on a call...

Looking at the ZTE Axon 7 on paper, it seems great. The specs are high-end, it's running Marshmallow, and it looks quite nice. In practice, it wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be. This isn't a bad phone—there's no single deal breaker for me, but...
