Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V (Black) review

Editors' note: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V was replaced for Sony's 2012 Cyber-shot lineup by the HX30V and HX20V . The HX9V is still available, however, so if you're not sure if you should spend the extra money to get the new HX30V, here are reasons...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is overflowing with shooting features, and has excellent photo and video quality and solid shooting performance.

The HX9V might actually be too much camera for some users and there are a couple of minor design issues.

Feature junkies in search of a compact megazoom should get the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

You'd be hard-pressed to find a camera that offers more features than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V ($350 as of June 1, 2011). Two years ago, its 16X-optical-zoom lens would have been enough to turn heads. In today's world of ever-shrinking cameras with...

16X zoom lens with 24mm wide angle ; Superb 1080p, 60-fps video quality ; In-camera GPS and compass ; Great modes for 3D, panorama, and low-light shots

Oversaturated colors in Auto mode ; Limited GPS features ; Pop-up flash is too powerful

The 16X-optical-zoom Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is loaded with fun extras, including 3D shooting, excellent video quality, in-camera GPS, and groundbreaking scene modes.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

Sony packs its latest digital ideas into the Sony HX9V, a 16-megapixel, 16x pocket long zoom, offering high-resolution stills and Full HD video. The result is a versatile digital camera with a wide zoom range and plenty of tricks to get great shots in...

Excellent optical quality; High resolution; High-resolution Panorama mode; Good video quality; Good grip; Fast autofocus

Sluggish user interface and Full HD video mode; Heavy noise suppression; GPS is sometimes slow to sync

The 16.2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot HX9V serves an overlapping market of consumers. Outfitted with an optically-stabilized 24-384mm equivalent lens, this compact digital camera is able to capture wide views, smooth zoom transitions, and HD video...

Sony HX9V Review

16mp in my pocket? Are you kidding me? What is it? The Sony Cybershot HX9V is a top-end compact all-in-one camera, akin to the Coolpix S9100 or Fujifilm F550EXR. With a 16mp 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor and a 24-384mm (equivalent) f/3.3-4.9 zoom...

Sony HX9V

Sony offers what may be the year's best travel zoom

Extremely sharp; Outstanding color accuracy

Ugly, pixelated noise reduction; A few design quirks

Iterating in subtle ways over the HX7V, Sony’s new Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V aims to be none other than the very best travel zoom camera currently on the market. And what we really appreciate about this model is that the company has dared to achieve this...

Best ultra-zoom digital camera

16x zoom lens, good photo quality overall, class-leading HD video quality, 3D and other shooting modes

Slow at some tasks, low-light images lose detail

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V

The Sony Cyber-shot HX9V is a 16.2 Megapixel pocket super-zoom with a 16x stabilised optical zoom lens, 24mm wide angle coverage and a 3in LCD screen. With a new 16.2 Megapixel back-illuminated Exmor-R CMOS sensor, which it shares with the...

Great 16 Megapixel image quality ; 1080p50 HD video ; Superior Auto composite modes ; Hi Resolution panoramas

Poor GPS performance (on test sample) ; Only 2 apertures in Manual mode ; Proprietary A/V port ; Quality deteriorates quickly at high ISOs

The Sony Cyber-shot HX9V was so obviously designed to compete head on with the Lumix TZ20 / ZS10 it's hard not to discuss it in terms of how it matches up to the market leader's flagship travel zoom. After all, if you're in the market for a compact...
