DJI Phantom 3 review: an aerial photography drone for the masses

DJI has cornered the consumer drone market by making its products accessible and easy to use. Despite the "Professional" name, the Phantom 3 is a 4K video drone that's perfect for the masses. Hobbyist video makers and amateur fliers have an easy choice...

Excellent video quality ; Easy to use ; Good battery life for itsclass ; Excellent app with useful features

Lacksadvanced flying modes ; The design needs updating

I was a little underwhelmed when the Phantom 3 launched. I was hoping for a more radical redesign, and a few killer autopilot features (DJI say's these are in the works, just they're insistent on them being safe). Instead, DJI played it a little safe,...

DJI Phantom 3 4K

When the DJI Phantom 3 4K was announced earlier this year it came with a $999 sticker price. But the drone was discounted immediately, selling for $799 as part of a promotion that never ended, and DJI eventally made it the official asking price. The...

Very stable in the air. Easy to fly. Smooth 4K video capture. 20mm wide-angle lens. Raw and JPG still capture. 22-minute flight time. Built-in GPS. Return-to-home function. Automated takeoff and landing. Attractive price

Limited operating range. Propellers intrude into footage. Battery requires more than an hour to recharge. Requires Android or iOS device

The Phantom 3 4K captures stable ultra high-definition video from the air and includes all of the safety features you expect from a DJI drone.

DJI Phantom 3 Professional

The DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone delivers a more refined flying experience and superior video quality to its predecessor, and earns Editors' Choice honors in the process.

Easy to fly. Very stable in the air. Smooth video capture, even during motion. 20mm wide-angle lens. 4K video capture. Raw and JPG still capture. High-quality Live View feed. Built-in GPS. Return-to-home function. Automated flight modes.

Battery life limits flying time. Wide-angle lens shows some edge distortion.

Conclusion The Phantom 3 Professional is the best quadcopter that we've reviewed to date. It takes the ease of use that made us enamored with our previous Editors' Choice, DJI's Phantom 2 Vision+, and refines just about every aspect of operation. The...

DJI Phantom 3 Professional review

DJI's Phantom series have become a benchmark for consumer drones -- or quadcopters, if you prefer -- thanks to their simple setup, ease of flying and relatively low price. The current king of the lineup, the Phantom 3 Professional, raises the bar even...

The DJI Phantom 3 Professional is easy to set up, simple to fly and its stabilised camera shoots beautiful 4K footage.

The Phantom 3 Pro isn't cheap, and it's hard to distinguish 4K footage from 1080p. Buying spare batteries, which each manage only 20 minutes of flight time, adds even more cost.

With its simple operation and great image quality, the DJI Phantom 3 Professional is one of the best ways to get into aerial videography.

Review: DJI Phantom 3 Professional

The Phantom drones from DJI are beloved for their ease of use. The new version, which adds 4K video capabilities, is even simpler to fly.

Much easier to fly than not only the previous models, but competitors too. Produces higher quality, more stable videos. Improved controller makes it easier to fly and to shoot images

Indoor flight is still difficult. Camera gimbal doesn't swivel, and the camera still isn't removable

The Best Drones

The DJI Phantom 3 Professional is the best drone for most pilots. For less than $1,000, it's easy to fly and captures 4K or 1080p footage for 18 minutes. Nothing else in its price range can match its combination of usability, features, and reliability.

DJI Phantom 3 Professional Review

A solid filming machine that was recently discontinued, which has led to very low retail prices

Good video quality, great flight performance

Can be expensive if not on sale

Like all of DJI's Phantom line, the Phantom 3 Professional is a good and capable drone. However, most users would be better off spending a bit more to get top shelf quality, or saving quite a bit of money on some other similar models.

The best has gotten even better with DJI's new Phantom 3 Professional, a drone that captures stunning, super-smooth 4K video from the skies. But it's the new controller with Lightning cable support, as well as a revamped iOS app, that truly bring this...

Come on, DJI, ship it with a cheap plastic lens cap ; The ; is available from ; partner B&H with free expedited shipping for $1,259. It includes a 16-gigabyte micro SD card.

Review: A critical look at DJI's Phantom 3 Professional

China's DJI made a gutsy move with the release of the Phantom 3. The Phantom 2 Vision+ was already more or less unchallenged as the best prosumer-level all-in-one camera drone on the market, while the Inspire One offered a clear step up for early...

Range is up from ~500 m (1,640 ft) to a whopping 2 km (1.2 mi) and beyond, although the video feed gets a bit blocky beyond a few hundred meters.

DJI Phantom 3 Professional

Over the last few years, DJI has come to dominate the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) market. The key to the Chinese manufacturer's success has been to make these complicated pieces of machinery affordable and usable to complete novices. Last year's...

Ease of use ; 4K video quality ; Robust, customisable remote control

23-minute battery life ; Camera doesn't pan left-right ; 16GB microSD card

The DJI Phantom 3 Professional is easily the best drone on the market at this price thanks to 4K video, a fantastic new remote control and an abundance of new flying features.
