Apple Watch Series 3 review: A good watch, a so-so phone replacement

All told, the Apple Watch Series 3 feels like two separate devices. When it's used as a traditional smartwatch — by which I mean it's connected to, and in range of a phone — it's the best wearable Apple has ever made. Performance is much improved,...

Improved performance ; Great battery life when connected to a phone ; Valuable new fitness features ; Siri feels more useful

iPhone still needs to be on to receive texts ; Lousy battery life on LTE ; Call quality can vary ; Apple Music streaming not ready yet

Chris is Engadget's senior mobile editor and moonlights as a professional moment ruiner. His early years were spent taking apart Sega consoles and writing awful fan fiction. That passion for electronics and words would eventually lead him to covering...

Apple Watch Series 3 review

The Apple Watch Series 3 is the best smartwatch you can buy -- and oh so close to replacing your phone.

Makes calls from your wrist ; Voice control is excellent ; A joy to use ; Masses of personalization options ; Superb fitness tracking ability

Third-party app support is lacking ; Expensive ; Speaker is quiet

The one major new feature to the Apple Watch Series 3 — cellular connectivity — isn’t a reason to buy it, at least, not yet. But Apple’s Watch was already the best smartwatch you could buy, and the strong performance and sensible software enhancements...

Apple Watch Series 3

Apple adds cellular connectivity and doubles down on fitness features with the Watch Series 3.

Built-in cellular connectivity. Improved heart rate monitoring. Faster processor. Clear call quality. New band and case options.

Expensive. LTE drains battery rapidly.

Bottom Line: Apple adds cellular connectivity and doubles down on fitness features with the Watch Series 3.

The Apple Watch 3’s best feature costs more, kills its battery

The Apple Watch Series 3 offers built-in cellular for data and even phone calls. It works remarkably well, but not without a cost -- in battery life and money.

Cellular connection works well for phone calls, email, Siri and messages. Music now syncs more easily. Improvements in fitness tracking and added watch faces. Adds barometer to GPS and swimproofing. Same overall size as last year’s watch.

Battery life takes a major hit when making calls or during GPS workouts. 42mm cellular model is expensive, and that’s before monthly wireless service and Apple Music fees. Still requires an iPhone to set up and pair with. A new Watch is expected later...

The Apple Watch Series 3 is the best overall smartwatch you can buy, but battery limitations and add-on fees keep it from being a must-have upgrade. Apple with likely release an upgrade later this year.

Review: Apple Watch Series 3

Now that it has LTE built in, it finally makes good on its promise to save you from your phone.

An always-on LTE connection totally changes what you can do with a Watch. It's an impressive fitness tracker. Believe it or not, Siri's pretty great.

The battery lasts a day in the best case---and often less. The Watch's interface still takes too long to figure out.

Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE review: missed connections

Option for LTE ; Faster processor ; watchOS 4 (not specific to this hardware)

Cellular connectivity problems ; Apple Music streaming not working yet ; Unreliable Siri ; Notable battery drain with LTE

You should still call me on my cellphone

Apple Watch Series 3 Review

The Apple Watch Series 3 introduces one major feature that aims to break the bond that has kept it tethered to its master, the iPhone. Now that true cellular connectivity is on board with the Apple Watch Series 3, is that, along with some other new...

Built-in cellular connection finally ; Robust platform with WatchOS 4 ; Bigger focus on health & fitness ; Apple Music streaming coming later this year

Same restrained look as before ; $400 price tag for the cellular model is pretty stiff ; Not a whole lot of "new" stuff

Apple Watch Series 3 review: Always connected, just without the guilt

Apple announced the third generation Apple Watch alongside new iPhones last month. What sets the Series 3 model apart from previous iterations is that it comes with the option to connect it to a cellular network, breaking the requirement to always have...

Battery life ; Bright, sharp display ; Siri integration is much better ; Capable of ditching iPhone for short periods of time

It's more expensive than the non-LTE Apple Watch Series 3 ; A monthly fee is a non-starter for some

Apple wants to dodge these tariffs on Apple Watch and Mac Pro parts imported from China (again)

Apple is requesting the reinstatement of exclusions from tariffs on the Apple Watch and several Mac Pro components that are imported from China. Apple currently pays a 7.5% tariff on Apple Watches imported from China, and seven key Mac Pro components...

Comment: Apple Watch Series 3 has become a white elephant for Apple

The Apple Watch Series 3 is becoming a problem for Apple. Updating the smartwatch is getting messier and messier but, at the same time, having a $199 Watch option is an incredible deal for a brand like Apple. So what the company should do about the...
