Matrix PowerWatch review

It's charged by your body heat, but the PowerWatch doesn't have us burning up with excitement...

Never requires you to charge it ; Covers the bare essentials with step counting and 50m water resistance

Uncomfortable and bulky design ; Has limited functionality for the price ; No compatabiltiy with third-party apps

As a proof of concept for body heat-powered tech, the PowerWatch delivers. But as a viable option for your wrist, you’re best looking elsewhere

Matrix Powerwatch review

A smartwatch that's charged entirely by your body heat

Incredible charging tech ; Temperature gauge ; Lightweight

Limited software ; Thick and chunky design ; Not enough fitness features

The Matrix Powerwatch is a fantastic innovation allowing you to wear a smartwatch without ever having to worry about charging it up. Unless you really need this technology right now though, you won't want to buy the Matrix Powerwatch. It's not a great...

The price is due to be pitched at $499 (£391) when it comes to market in June this year. For the next few weeks, however, you can still support it on Matrix’s Indiegogo page for only $199 (£156).

Matrix PowerWatch review: The smartwatch you never have to charge

The PowerWatch might not contribute to your collection of charging cables, but it comes up short in terms of truly "smart" features

Never needs charging

Big and bulky ; Doesn’t show notifications ; Looks cheap

That’s not to say the technology isn’t exciting: it absolutely is. It’s just that we’re already making great progress with power-efficiency and battery technology, and it’s hard to see how Matrix’s PowerWatch can match those smaller, more feature-rich...

The dream of the no-charge watch: Matrix PowerWatch claims to run on your body heat (hands-on)

How soon before wearables can skip charging completely? The Matrix watch aims for next year.

Matrix PowerWatch review: The smartwatch you never need to charge

The PowerWatch's thermoelectric technology is fascinating, but it comes up some way short in terms of useful features

It’s impossible not to find the technology in the PowerWatch appealing. After all, how many other smartwatches can you say will never need to be charged?
