Acer Iconia W4 review: a big upgrade to a small Windows tablet

Acer's Iconia W3 wasn't quite the best introduction to 8-inch Windows tablets; we liked it, but its subpar display and modest performance kept it from be

Much-improved display ; Above-average battery life ; Good performance for the money

Slightly bulky compared to other 8-inch Windows tablets ; Subpar speakers

The Iconia W4 may not stand out in any one area, but it's a textbook example of how to do a small Windows tablet with a solid design, a pleasant display and long battery life.

Acer Iconia W4 review: After last year’s rocky start, this tablet is finally a good buy

It's a big step up from the original W3, though other than an HDMI-out port it doesn't stand out from the crowd.

Micro HDMI port ; Good benchmark performance

Mediocre display ; Thick and heavy compared to much of the competition ; Comparatively low battery life

Acer’s Iconia W4 is a big step up from its predecessor, but it doesn't stand out among the current crowd of 8-inch Windows tablets.

Acer ICONIA W4-820-2671

The new Iconia W4 corrects a lot of what we didn't like about the original (but not everything), and the all-day battery life is enough to make it one of the better 8-inch Windows 8 tablets. With an Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD, it's...

Acer's Iconia W4 has excellent battery life for an 8-inch Windows tablet; plenty of ports for a slate, including HDMI, SD card, and USB, as well as a decently large 64GB SSD.

The clunky plastic design does the W4 no favors, and it's thicker and heavier than many other Windows tablets. The screen resolution feels dated compared to a growing number of HD-or-better tablets.

The 8-inch Acer Iconia W4 has a few advantages that help it stand out from a crowd of similar devices, including great battery life and enough ports to support basic productivity. It's also much better -- and less expensive -- than last year's W3...

Acer Iconia W4-820-2466 review

Acer's first attempt at an 8-inch Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W3, worked well enough for an early example of the style, but it was soon eclipsed by newer models from Dell, Lenovo, and others with better design, features, and performance.

Acer Iconia W4-820-2466

The Acer Iconia W4-820-2466 is a bright, compact 8-inch Windows 8 slate tablet. With a full copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student and almost 10 hours of battery life, it's a viable alternative to carrying an ultraportable laptop to class or meetings.

In-Plane Switching (IPS) screen. Micro-HDMI port. Includes Microsoft Office Home and Student. Almost 10 hours of battery life

A bit pricier than rivals. No GPS. No 3G/4G/LTE. Lots of bloatware

The Acer Iconia W4-820-2466 ($379.99, as tested) is an entry-level Windows 8 slate tablet that is small enough to carry around while you attend a day's worth of classes or business meetings. It's not quite a laptop replacement until you add extra...

Acer Iconia 6120

The Acer Iconia 6120 dual-screen laptop is a unique and innovative take on multitasking, but the virtual keyboard and Acer's touch software pack aren't ready for prime time.

Dual screens equals lots of screen real estate. Innovative touch software bundle. Reasonably priced. USB 3.0 port included. Its TouchBrowser utilizes both screens.

Virtual keyboard will anger and flummox most typists. Big and heavy for a tablet or laptop. Bottom screen is hard to use under a bright light. Media card slot reader is an external USB attachment. Gesture editor and number of other utilities are too...

The ring utility also includes a gesture editor, which lets you create your own gesture to launch any given program. To my displeasure, though, it took multiple tries tracing the letter "I" with my finger to launch Internet Explorer. There's a Web clip...

Acer Iconia W4 review: Affordable 8-inch Atom-based Windows tablet

This affordable 8-inch Atom-based (Bay Trail) Windows 8.1 tablet has a nice IPS screen and delivers all-day battery life under light usage modes. Limited screen size, internal storage and processing power will prevent it from being more than a...

Decent performance ; Microsoft Office (Home & Student) included ; Good battery life ; Good-quality IPS screen ; Supports USB storage

Ergonomics for business productivity could be better ; Short on internal storage ; Not suitable for demanding workloads

Good battery life should keep the Iconia W4 going through the working day, so long as you're not taxing it with over-strenuous workloads. With an external Bluetooth keyboard and mouse it could probably cope with more serious work than web browsing,...

Acer Iconia W4 Tablet Review

We've seen a flurry of 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablets hit the market over the past several months. Next up is the Acer Iconia W4, the follow-up to the company's first Windows 8.1 tablet, featuring an 8.0-inch 1,280 x 800 display and the same quad-core...

Display offers good viewing angles and color reproduction. Good performance from Intel's Bay Trail SoC.

Lousy camera and speakers. Disappointing display resolution. Bloatware. Uninspiring design.

The 5-megapixel rear-facing camera leaves a lot to be desired. Image quality indoors is flat out terrible while photos snapped outdoors under ideal lighting conditions are still pretty lousy. I get trying to save a few bucks by including a cheaper...
