Acer Iconia W510 review: as Acer enters the Windows 8 era, it returns to its netbook roots

The W510 is a relatively inexpensive hybrid offering best-in-class battery life. Still, its cramped, netbook-like keyboard could be a dealbreaker.

Having met with Acer's product team in person (and having read its executives quoted in the press), it's obvious the company is eager to shed its reputation for cheap products and be taken more seriously as an OEM capable of building premium PCs. You...

Portable, But Not That Potent

If you want to compete with the iPad, you better look, feel, and weigh like the iPad. That was the clear idea behind the Microsoft Surface , and that's where we're headed with the third-party Windows slates that are beginning to arrive on the market....

Acer Iconia Tab W510-1422

The Acer Iconia W510-1422 detachable tablet laptop goes all day long and most of the night, with a highly portable design, and a docking keyboard that lets you choose between laptop and tablet.

Seriously long battery life. Immensely portable. Windows 8.

Atom processor is slow. Webcam lags. Limited storage space.

Acer's Iconia W510 hybrid bets on battery life

Windows 8 plus Intel Atom equals great battery life, but calls for other sacrifices.

The ; is less expensive than some other Atom-based hybrids, and its detachable tablet screen is light and portable. Battery life is excellent.

In laptop mode, the system is awkwardly top-heavy, and the puny keyboard and touch pad are not designed for serious use.

Offering low-powered Intel Atom tablet/laptop hybrids for $750 or more is a dodgy proposition for budget-looking systems such as the Iconia W510, but all-day battery life is a great selling point.

Acer Iconia W510 review: Wide-screen tablet with a clever dock

Acer's Atom-based Windows 8 tablet is great for video, if not books, and the docking station models are serviceable as netbook-sized laptops.

Clever docking design allows use as tablet or laptop ; Widescreen aspect ratio great for video viewing

Tepid overall styling ; Not optimally styled for reading

The W5's widescreen display will appeal to some, but kill the deal for others--a major conundrum for those eyeing the Surface and other Windows 8 tablets as well. In the end, eying those others might be a good idea--the W510 is a decent product, but...

The Clover Trail (Atom Z2760) Review: Acer's W510 Tested

Microsoft's Windows 8/RT launch has been a bit choppier than expected. I remember hearing rumors that the OS release could slip into next year, but it seems that the solution to the problem was to launch as devices were ready rather than delay...

This week we're having a look at the Acer Iconia W500 series, specifically in the model tagged Iconia W510-1422 with full Windows 8 and multiple modes of computing action. This machine works as a tablet, as a notebook with its keyboard dock (in the box...

This machine is ready for the 2013 season of Windows 8 action, but it’s not going to replace your MacBook Air. It’s not meant to – if you’re a Windows user and want a mobile device ready for everyday action and a relatively large amount of battery...

Acer Iconia W511 Review

Windows 8 hybrids are a relatively new breed, but it seems like a whole lot of tech companies have one on the market already. That includes Acer with its Iconia W511 tablet, which we are about to take through its paces. It is a 10.1-inch slate powered...

3G connectivity ; Full-blown Windows 8 with legacy app support ; Decent battery life ; Cheap for a Windows 8 hybrid

Bland design ; Dubious build quality ; Touchpad is uncomfortable

The Acer Iconia W511 is clearly aimed at tablet buyers on a tight budget, or simply people who aren't willing to spend too much on a Windows 8 hybrid device. It may look a bit uninspiring, but it's light, affordable and offers an adequate set of...
