Apple iPad mini 2 review: Moving up the ranks

The iPad mini with Retina screen is everything the little tablet deserved to be - a more compact equal of the bigger iPad with no compromises made. And unfortunately, it's just one thing short of what we all thought a compact tablet should be - cheap....

7.9" LED-backlit IPS LCD touchscreen, 1536 x 2048 pixels, ~ 324 ppi, oleophobic coating ; Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity with MIMO dual antennas ; Optional 2G/3G GSM, CDMA, LTE connectivity (data only, separate models) ; Optional GPS with A-GPS...

Expensive for a compact tablet ; Non expandable memory, extra storage is largely overpriced ; Tied into iTunes for uploading most of the content ; No standard USB port ; No GPS receiver in the Wi-Fi-only version

Ever since we saw the original Apple iPad mini, we've been hoping for a Retina screen for this wonderful compact tablet. Now that it has it, it's everything we expected it to be. A high-quality screen with immaculate sharpness makes a world of...

iPad mini with Retina display review: as good as the Air, just smaller

Last year Apple introduced the iPad mini, a second size option for its tablet lineup. In addition to being, well, miniature, it featured a beautiful desi

Stunning display ; Solid performance ; Long battery life

No Touch ID ; Relatively expensive

The iPad mini matches the full-sized iPad Air in display quality, design and performance. Just be prepared to pay more than you would have for last year's model.

iPad mini review

The iPad mini isn't just an Apple tablet made to a budget. This isn't just a shrunken-down iPad. This is, in many ways, Apple's best tablet yet

Beautiful, thin and light design ; Stellar battery life ; Bright, clear display ; Sturdy construction

Too wide for some ; Pricier than many 7-inch alternatives

This isn't just an Apple tablet made to a budget. This isn't just a shrunken-down iPad. This is, in many ways, Apple's best tablet yet, an incredibly thin, remarkably light, obviously well-constructed device that offers phenomenal battery life. No, the...

Apple iPad Mini 2 review

Apple iPads are synonymous with "tablet" for good reason. Their high-end designs, fast performance, simple operating system and well-stocked App Store make them the go-to choice in the category.

The iPad Mini 2 has a sharp Retina screen, an ultraportable design, great battery life and it's the most affordable tablet with access to the iOS App Store. Upgradeable to iOS 10 later this year.

Android and Amazon tablets -- and even Windows laptops -- are available for less. Base model includes only 16GB of non-expandable storage. It's missing the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and split-screen feature found on newer iPads.

It lacks the features and speed of a cutting-edge iPad, but the Mini 2 is still a solid tablet for basics, especially if you can buy it at a discount.

Apple iPad mini 2

The iPad mini 2 is the best value iOS product on the market today, letting you into the Apple app world without breaking the bank.

Beautifully built. Fast. Sharp screen. Excellent app options.

Not the latest Apple tech. Not as easy to hold with a single hand as narrower small-screen tablets.

Comparisons and Conclusions Let's dispatch the iPad mini 3 first. It costs $100 more and all you get out of it is Touch ID. No, we don't understand it either. But the iPad mini 2 is by far Apple's best tablet value at the moment — all the iPad app...

Small Grows Up

This is the iPad mini we've all been waiting for. When the first generation iPad mini debuted last year, it was a terrific product. Apple's first stab at a smaller tablet looked more far more elegant than the competition, managed to squeeze a larger...

Gorgeous 2048 x 1536 pixel display. 10-plus hour battery life will more than serve your cross-country plane flight, or close to a week of casual daily use. A7 processor (with M7 co-processor) offers more power than you may ever need on a 7-inch tablet....

Pricey — similar sized and specced tablets go for closer to $200. Stereo speakers both located on one end of the device. Would be nice if it had TouchID like the iPhone 5s, but with the problems cropping up related to that feature lately, we’re...

iPad mini with Retina display review

Every inch an iPad. Last year, the overwhelming message of the iPad mini was simple: the iPad mini was smaller, but it was still an iPad. Tim Cook, Phil Schiller, and Jony Ive all reminded us...

Gorgeous display ; Great battery life ; Hugely improved performance ; Unbeatable ecosystem

iOS 7 has problems ; Expensive for a small tablet ; I miss the black color

Part middle-ground, part no-compromise

Apple iPad mini With Retina Display

The new iPad mini has a super-sharp Retina display and packs all of the power of the iPad Air into a more portable package.

Beautifully built. Fast. Sharp screen. Excellent app options. Cellular version works on all carriers

Expensive. Not as easy to hold with a single hand as narrower small-screen tablets

The new Apple iPad mini With Retina display ($399 to $829) is just a shrunken iPad Air. It's so similar to Apple's flagship tablet that your decision will pretty much be completely based on size and price. Like the Air, this is one of the slimmest and...

Apple iPad Mini 2 ( space gray, 16GB, T-mobile)

The Air 2, original Air, Mini 2, and Mini 3 will support the operating system's new picture-in-picture functionality. And yes, these are features that have been around for quite a while on competitors' tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy line and...

The iPad Mini 2 offers an excellent high-resolution display that rivals the iPad Air's, a fast A7 processor, and tops it off with improved Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity, with battery life that's as good or better than the original Mini.

A starting price of $299 places it well above the small-tablet competition, and adding more storage or LTE makes it even more expensive. It lacks the Touch ID fingerprint sensor found on the iPad Mini 3.

The iPad Mini 2 shrinks down the iPad Air into an even more compact package, sacrificing nearly nothing. It's a terrific smaller tablet.
