Panasonic DMR-ES20D review

If you are going to replace a video cassette recorder with a DVD recorder there is a confusing array of options. If you want one that makes Freeview recording easy, however, the field narrows to a handful, including Panasonic's DMRES20D.

Built-in Freeview and EPG ; multiformat disc recording ; digital icture

One Freeview tuner ; no editing or EPG when recording ; editing on DVD-RAM only

Panasonic DMR-ES20 review

Until very recently, DVD recorders were scuppered by having analogue tuners - in other words, you were forced to either make do with dodgy 14:9 pics or rely on an external set-top box (connected via analogue Scart, naturally)

Panasonic DMRES20D review

The ES20D offers one simple benefit to consumers -- the combination of DVD recorder and Freeview tuner in one box. This makes recording far easier as you can zip around the guide with ease, but in order to keep the low price tag the features list has...

Ease of use ; Freeview integration ; Wide recording format support

Lacks features such as DV input, DivX and SD card slot ; No hard drive ; No dual-layer DVD+R support

As a player, the ES20D cannot be faulted, providing high-quality DVD playback across component video and RGB Scart. The former is the best option for flat-screen owners, and while many standalone DVD players will upscale to high definition resolutions...

Panasonic DMR-ES20D DVD recorder

One of the very few DVD recorders with a built-in Freeview digital TV tuner...

Integrated digital TV tuner; multi-compatibility; user-friendly functionality; excellent all-round performance ;

No DV input for camcorders ; Given the growing popularity of Freeview and with digital TV broadcasts set to eventually replace analogue, it's a wonder only why more DVD recorders aren't arriving equipped with an integrated digital tuner ; It's even...

Panasonic's DMR-ES20D is almost unique among DVD recorders as it includes an integrated digital TV tuner offering a single solution for watching Freeview, recording and playing discs. Its excellent all-round ability and flawless functionality make it...

A good recorder once you upgrade the firmware

I bought this recorder about a year ago, mainly to be able to backup the content of my Explorer 8300HD Digital Video Recorder. I immediately noticed that the auto clock setting which use a signal broadcasted by PBS didn't work. It was a minor ...

Good picture quality. Didn't reject any blank disc. DV input.

Very buggy before upgrading firmware. No component video inputs
