A good, solid buy; despite it's glitches

I decided to invest in a DVD player about a 18 months ago, and after shopping around for a couple of months settled on the DVD-709 after I found one for £190. I haven't had any regrets about my decision, but that is not to say the player is perfect....

Multi-region from the handset, Good picture and sound

I don't like the tacky silver colour, clunky remote

Worst DVD Player Ever!

I have finally decided to write a review on the Samsung DVD709. If you look at the DVD market right now, you see that more discs are multi-layered, and that many great players are becoming much cheaper. Well, this is how I began to hate Samsung's DVD...

The best £130 DVD player

For a while the 709 has been dogged with compatibly problems, The Matrix and The Patriot just locked up on the unit but thanks to Samsungs EEPROM upgrade those problems are finally over.

Good entry level DVD

Horrible remote control

Samsung DVD-709 - Inexpensive, You Get What You Pay For

I bought this from about 6 or 7 months ago, for about $130. It was the most inexpensive dvd player could find at the time. For the price, I was very surprised. It has played every dvd I have put in it to date, and every cd. The features...

Inexpensive, plays both cd's and dvd's.

Occasional skips, will not play cd-r's, few features.

If you can still find it, its kind of worth it

I've owned this thing for about 14 months now. For the most part I was happy with it, but its not the best DVD player ever made. I have had it in for service, but the problem is supposedly unfixable. On some DVD's (in particular Paramount and Disney...

Easy to hack, cool remote, simple design, many features

Picture freezes on many DVDs, runs very hot

I even watched The Matrix on it!

If you've read many reviews, you'll have seen several that criticized the 709 model for not being able to play certain DVDs, primarily the Matrix. I got this DVD player for free in early 2000, and therefore didn't have many expectations.

Price, easy to use

Occasional skips

Excellent value player

I got mine for free a few years back. I vaguely recall that it came bundled with my creative DTT2500 speakers, which incidentally was a perfect match for the DVD player.

Low Price, Great Quality

No DD5.1 decoding, need separate decoder

It was great... until The Matrix came along.

Initially, this DVD player was great. Being priced lower than almost every other model was great, and there were no disadvantages to buying it at the time. It also worked great for the price. The picture quality was excellent, and the sound was...

Costs less than most other DVD players

Won't play all DVD's, Samsung tech support is a joke

Cheap DVD great sound and picture

The Samsung DVD 709 is a great deal for the price. It comes with large remote but you'll love the unit anyway. A great feature is the ZOOM feature, very funny to play with it and useful to get to the detail in every movie. But expect to buy...

Very easy to navigate menus and well performer

Firmware was old in my unit

Samsung 709 is good for the money

I held off buying a DVD player because they were too expensive and the DVD selection wasn't great. When I saw this Samsung 709 for $130, I thought "why not". It came with alot of good features - double zoom, high speed/bit digital to analog converter,...

Inexpensive with lots of features. A good "first" DVD player.

Needs good ventilation or DVD's will skip if the player gets too warm.
