TomTom Start 20 review

As affordable sat navs go, they don't come any better than this

Slick unit ; Good screen ; Easy to use ; The price is right

No traffic info

So should the TomTom Start 20 be on your shopping list? Absolutely. For £130 you get a dedicated sat nav that beats the pants off most of its standalone rivals and makes those freebie apps you can download for your phone look inadequate by comparison....

TomTom Start 20

TomTom brings some of its premium features to its budget Start range.

4.3in widescreen ; Same menu system as higher-end models ; 4GB memory

The RDS-TMC receiver add-on is expensive ; 5in models now available for same price ; Integrated screen mount

is a lot more streamlined, so it made sense to bring this to entry-level devices as well. Touching the screen in map view takes you to a simple six-icon main menu, which then takes you to further submenus of extra choices.

The TomTom Start 20 Southern Africa edition GPS may be a budget oriented device, but it delivers a comprehensive set of features that will actually be used in day to day operation. The only noteworthy feature missing from this device is HD traffic...

TomTom Start 20

TomTom Start 20 satnav

Review TomTom?s entry level Start satnavs have long been the default choice for anyone wanting a reliable but basic PND. Now the range has been given a wash and brush up with the release of some new 4.3in screen devices with prices starting at ?130.

TomTom?s navigation system, its maps, UI and voices are pretty much state of the art and the device itself with its clever and versatile integrated mounting arm is physically impressive. But at ?130 the absence of traffic data seems poor value. ?
