Acer Aspire 5 (A515-51-58HD)

Intel's Optane Memory perks up the 1TB hard drive of Acer's $500 Aspire 5 laptop, but a dim screen and tepid performance will keep it off budget buyers' short lists.

Intel Optane Memory boosts hard drive speed. 1080p resolution. Comfortable keyboard.

Dim, dark display. Scanty 4GB of system RAM. Lackluster battery life. No SSD, backlit keyboard, touch screen, or Windows Hello support.

Bottom Line: Intel's Optane Memory perks up the 1TB hard drive of Acer's $500 Aspire 5 laptop, but a dim screen and tepid performance will keep it off budget buyers' short lists.

Acer Aspire 5 A515-51-58HD review: Optane memory gives this budget laptop a boost

While it's thicker and heavier than we'd like and it suffers from an iffy display, the Optane memory-equipped Acer Aspire 5 delivers impressive quad-core performance for hundreds less than its ultraportable competitors.

Optane memory delivers impressive boost to HDD performance ; Solid quad-core performance given its budget price ; Springy, tactile keyboard

Dim display with poor viewing angles ; A little heavier and thicker than competing ultraportables ; No keyboard backlighting

Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G-509A (8250U, MX130, FHD) Laptop Review

metal base top ; low throttling ; dedicated GeForce MX130 ; case handles cooling well ; two maintenance hatches ; Ethernet port

poor display in almost all respects (brightness, colors, contrast) ; mediocre keyboard ; relatively thick and large case ; weight ; WLAN performance

Looking at the whole package, the Acer Aspire 5 could have been a solid multimedia laptop if the display had not spoiled the evaluation. We would have gotten over the small weaknesses such as having only a single USB Type-A 3.0 connection or the...

Acer Aspire 5

A decent quality mid-range laptop. Acer Aspire 5.

Smart design ; Good all-round performance ; Keeps cool and quiet

A515 version has poor screen ; Cramped cursor keys ; No keyboard backlight

A decent quality mid-range laptop – but be mindful of the version you buy.
