Sony RDR-HDC300 HDD/DVD recorder review

A high-definition PVR/DVD recorder with 320GB capacity

User-friendly interface, good codec support, plenty of connectivity options

Only one TV tuner, limited DVD recording options, bulky design

The Sony RDR-HDC300 HDD/DVD recorder boasts an intuitive user interface with plenty of codec support. On the downside, its recording functionality could definitely do with some improvement.

Sony RDR-HDC300

Sony's latest PVR is functional, but the lack of a dual-tuner really hurts.

Easy installation ; DivX support

Single tuner only ; Remote layout could be better

At its AU$749 asking price, the RDR-HDC300 feels a little underpowered. Quite why Sony's opted for a single digital tuner is baffling, as there's plenty of competition at this price point that does offer dual-tuner support.

Where to start. As far as I am concerned there is nothing remotely good about this crap box which is surprising given that a standard def RDR-HXD890 which I also have performs very well.

My parents have one of these, bought recently for $399 (160GB) and the larger capacity devices are also a fair bit cheaper now. Given they never learned how to use either the Panasonic or Grundig DVD recorder that preceeded it, I am glad they have...

When it comes to recording anything onto a DVD forget it! This recorder is out of its depth when you compare it to a Panasonic or even an LG, in fact I find it inferior to the Sony SD predecessors.
