Toshiba XD-E500

If you don't want to spring for Blu-ray, there are plenty of upconverting DVD players to choose from, but the Toshiba XD-E500 is one to avoid.

Energy efficient. 1080p24 output.

Picture suffers a loss of detail with HDMI output. Default picture settings cause Sharpening artifacts. Overly softened image quality when displaying JPEG files. Low-resolution menus.

Toshiba XD-E500 review: Toshiba XD-E500

Toshiba XD-E500

Solid DVD playback performance with extended definition (XDE) disabled; can play DivX, MP3, and WMA files burned on CDs and DVDs; can output DVD in 24 frames per second.

Expensive for a DVD player; XDE picture controls are best left off for the most-accurate picture; lacks features such as SACD playback and a USB port found on competing Oppo models; poor aspect ratio control on nonanamorphic DVDs.

The Toshiba XD-E500's XDE picture enhancements don't live up to the hype. While it's a solid upscaling DVD player, its high price makes it a hard sell.

Toshiba XD-E500 DVD Player – Benchmark

I can remember a time when Toshiba offered entry level DVD players and also high dollar flagship models like the SD-9200. As DVD players became a commodity Toshiba logically focused on mainstream consumer players much like the XD-E500 reviewed here....

The Toshiba XD-E500 is an exceptionally good low cost up-converting DVD player when used via HDMI and it received a perfect score under the HDMI section of the Secrets benchmark. In stark contrast was its de-interlacing performance using component...

Toshiba XD-E500

Toshiba dropped its support for HD DVD nearly a year ago, grudgingly conceding that BD is the de facto high-def optical disc format in much of the world. Still, the company hasn't exactly embraced Sony's format quite yet.

The difference between the XD-E500 and the BD-P1500 was most noticeable around the letters of the opening credits and the edges of stop-motion animated objects. The live-action DVD and BD versions of “X-Men: The Last Stand” looked extremely...

Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY

The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY is a DVD upscaler that delivers great image quality.

Very good at upscaling DVDs

Only half the price of an entry-level Blu-ray player with built-in DVD upscaler, no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs

The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY provides excellent DVD upscaling for high-definition TVs. However, make sure you're certain that you don't want to fork out a bit more for a Blu-ray player instead.

Toshiba XD-E500 review

The most exciting DVD player we've seen for some time. But can it rival Blu-ray?

Excellent upscaling ; Good DVD player ; Great value

In other respects, this player is a 'no-frills' budget model

As far as DVDs are concerned, this is one of the ultimate decks out there to make the most of your collection

Toshiba XD-E500 review

It's not HD but it's still one of the most accomplished DVD players we've seen

‘Sharp’ mode offers incredibly detailed pictures ; naturally vibrant colours ; smooth, stable motion ; nice styling

Sound could do with just a little more refinement

It’s not HD, but it’s one of the best affordable DVD players we’ve seen
